How much can I mill my 318 heads before...

-
I have a set of 920's that measure 63 cc's...

That's why I said "one" of the smallest combustion chambers but yes, yours' would be even better, especially if the pistons are down in the hole. I think the ports are the same??

Well, I'm working on a tight budget and I ported the heads myself (first time) so I'd like to use my heads and see how things turned out.

Using the heads I have is the cheapest way to go. ...

Jeff

did you ever finish them? I know you posted you weren't done yet... Post a picture..??? :)

Yes....both are done except for gasket matching the intake sides...!
I'll take some pictures today and post them up!

It got kinda fun once I got into it! Very satisfying feeling doing it myself too...like REAL hot rodding!
I love to say "built, not bought"

Now my expensive Doug's D453 headers will actually be of use...since it'll breath better.

Ok...here are some pictures. ..

Next stop is the hot tank...well, after gasket matching and "maybe" milling.
That screwdriver just falls through the runner and out the port.....handle diameter is .955".
I don't know how good I did.....guess I'll find out!

Jeff

Edit: Big thanks to 318willrun for walking me and others through the process! !!

raising the roof is better than dropping the floor any day on an LA ex.. Thats gotta flow better than stock. You can get some gains by slimming those valve guide bosses down too, make 'em streamlines with the flow. Keep posting.

Thanks....the valve guide area was difficult. ....the grinder kinda wanted to jump around down there...so I decided the best course of action was "do no harm"! LOL !

The combo is going to be:
318, stock bottom end
Hughes whiplash cam, lifters and springs
These ported heads
Stock iron 4 bbl. intake manifold - gasket matched
Doug's D453 headers (brand new on my bench. ..!)
Dual exhaust (no cross over. ..)
Thermoquad carb
2400 stall converter (already installed brand new 3:55 Dr. Diff gears)

I'll be happy to see 14's although I'll probably never get to a track...lol

I milled my set of "J" heads .040 on the block side and .030 on the intake side. No issues running them on my 318. I plan to do the same to a stock set of 318 heads shortly.

you have 3.55's and headers vs. my 2.76 (?) and manifolds. I'm hoping for high 14's, it would (should) be a breeze for you....... And I am going to visit the track :D

I forget....did you do a cam swap on yours?
yep, budget allowed for a cheap summit cam.... I think a 106.00 bucks cam and lifters. It's all recorded in the thread. I think your headers and gears should be worth close to a second over me. If I had your car, I'd be shooting for a 13.99 :)

I would be THRILLED with high 13's in my little 'Cuda!

get some 302 heads with smaller CC's off the bat. Even with no porting, they offer better performance than the "cleaned up" open 273/318 castings. They are pretty cheap off any '91+ LA 318 and no intake milling.
Factory 302 head engines are '85-'91, not all 318s had them either- the cop cars had 360 heads but the truck/van TBI heads with other numbers are equivalent. The compression went up since the pistons changed- compression increased on the 4bbl 360 head cop car engines too.

I went .015 on mine and didn't run into any issues.... Just dont have John mill them...lol

I went .050 with my 318 heads & had to take .040 off the intake as the intake bolts struggled to bolt up, i started with 69cc heads & .050 later ended up with 63cc
worked out comp to be 8.2:1 factory & ended up with just over 9:1 using a thinner head gasket & later slightly higher ch cast pistons along the way,
Now after reading your posts on porting i want to take the heads of & port them lol
Good work.

9:1 would be about perfect. .....although I don't think I'll take. 050" off my heads....

Related question, how much can you shave off a stock 318 head before needing adjustable valve gear? You are essentially placing the hydraulic rocker arms closer to the cam when you deck the heads. I.e., when are your push rods too long leaving the valves open when the cam is at 0 lift?
