how much difference between 3.91 and 4.10

-
Allow me to chime in!! I had a 3:23 suregrip in my bone stock 67 GTX 440 auto, and my best time down the 1/4 was 14.06. OK for a bone stocker but I wanted more so I swapped in a set of 3:91's. Guess what!! Except for the time I had to pedal it and might have broke into the 13's, the 3:91's did little to no good for my E.T. I'm with the guys on this one, unless big smoky burnouts are your goal, stick with the 3:23. There is a reason Chrysler referred to that gear as their "Maximum Performance" ratio!! Party on, Geof

i hear ya there. djvcuda has a 3.23 in his cuda. has dropped intot the mid 12's in the quarter and can cruise it any where. one of the biggest improvements he made was going from a MP 175K converter to a dynamic 9 1/2" converter. motot turns like 400 rpm less at cruise speed and at the track launches way better.

I think im going to probably end up with 3.91's....My car is minitubbed with quite a decent sized tire under it, so if i want the acceleration im looking for im going to atleast need a 3.91...from what i am reading, the 4.10 although not much different seems like overkill for the highway

With your tire size at 70 MPH your RPM would be with gears:

4.10 = 3506 RPM
3.91 = 3308 RPM

That's only 198 RPM difference.

3.91 at 60 mph = 2900 rpm
4.10 at 60 mph = 3000 rpm

had 3.91's in my dart with a 28" tire and hated it. allot of fun around town but once it got on the highway it sucked screaming and having people cruise past me. the 8 mpg really sucked too...lol have 2.94's in it now and love them.

i had 2.94s and i was only getting 11 mpg,the 3.91s are gonna kill me

tough decision for me....id really like to go with the 4.10's...i rarely drive on the highway and my current daily driver (1995 ford escort) turns 3300 on the highway at about 70mph, so im thinking if my ferd terd shitbox can handle it, maybe my scamp will be able to...like i said i dont drive on the highway too long, and for those times that i do i guess i will have to face it that i will be eating tons of gas...the rpm difference between 3.91 and 4.10 is minimal, but goin 4.10's is tempting....with the 4 speed i should be able to turn 61mph at 3000rpm and 71mph at 3500 with my 28 inch tall tire

go 4:10 then. its only a couple hundred rpm. once your screaming whats a couple hundred rpm? either way it will be fun as hell around town.

yes joe your right...i think i will....i have a feeling that one day in the future i mite get sick of them (just maybe lol) and if i do i still have my 3.23's to put back in if i need em...4.10's it will be

MSHRED,YOU SHOULD START LOOKING FOR A SPARE CENTER-SECTION TO PUT YOUR 3.23 ON.THAT WAY IF YOU ARE DRIVING LONG DISTANCE LIKE LETs say Moparfest.you can swap out 4.10,PUT CENTERSECTION WITH 3.23 IN AND ON YOUR WAY.THE JOB TAKES ABOUT 45 MINS. AND YOU,LL ALSO BE CHECKING PARTS SUCH AS BRAKES, BEARINGS,SEALS ETC..THIS IS WHAT I,VE DONE.JUST MY 2 CENTS..

sounds like a good idea...definatly something i might look for in the future, but right now funds are calling to just get her on the road and drive- but that is definatly a good idea for those long trips (after all cruising is some of the funnest parts of driving these cars)

You can put it on the backbench for now(all funds towards car)but if you come across one,don,t pass on it.These are getting harder to find now and the prices are rangeing $500-$1000.you might find one cheaper!good Luck!!

I guess it is good to have alot to pick from. I myself have a set of 3.23's 2 sets of 3.55's all of witch are 741 cases. I have a 3.91 489 and a 4.10 742 case along with 3 clutch sure grips and a cone one. Everytime I find a good deal on a set I pick them up they are never going to get any cheaper.
