How much should a basic 340 rebuild cost?

-
I haven't ran the numbers in a while now, but the last time I did I sat down and made me a list of everything I would need I called a couple of machine shops for the cost of machine work and the bill was around 5 grand and that was for a 318 and nothing fancy.
And what's the parts list look like? Brand? Machinist work and itemized per what services they were asked to do?

I'll answer any specific questions about things I may have overlooked, but if you're just going to be snarky and passive aggressive then I think we're done here.
okay, if you want to play coy then here's the specific question: list up the receipt or the costs of the components missing. cam, lifters, push rods, gasket kit, oil pump, pump pick up, timing chain, water pump, fuel pump. and what about the heads? did you re use your intake and carb?

you started with trying to be transparent but presented an example that was incomplete.

there was nothing snarky or passive aggressive in my responses, but if you're feeling attacked in some manner by all means go on ahead and ease it on down the road with your secret sauce cheapie rebuild numbers. that's super cool that you can do it for what ever number it was. good job. top marks!

Nobody's bein snarky. Either you're willing to share a cost list or not. That's on you. You've been asked VERY specific questions about missing items. You were asked what YOUR cost was, not what something "can be had for" somewhere else. They are legitimate questions to the subject.

It was all name brand parts. New rings, pistons, rod and main bearings. Arp rod bolts, resized rods. Oil pump, oil pump drive, cam, lifers, matched valve springs and timing chain. Hot tank block, bore & hone with torque plates, install cam bearings and freeze plugs, turn & polish the crankshaft. Cylinder heads, hot tanked, valve job ( 3 angle). Guide work, install valve springs with correct installed height. Gasket set. Prices sure were more reasonable back then that's for sure.

All name brands.. but 0 brands listed except ARP.

Hardened valve seats ?
Right! And see......somehow, all the head work isn't being talked about here. Seats, guides and new valves will eat up a THOUSAND BUCKS real quick like. BAM gone. Because if the heads need guides, then purt near guaranteed they need new valves and seats, because worn guides wear valve stems and a machine shop worth its salt won't do the job without new valves. Sometimes you have to have intake seats, too. Then you're really talkin about an expensive set of iron heads......and some people do it. Then you've got all the other parts and machine work. It's not a 2500 dollar proposition anymore. Not even here and we have some affordable machine shop prices around here.

I looked around and found some old notes: pistons- speed pro, rings I think were perfect circle, rod & main bearings- sealed power, cam set- comp cam 268H, oil pump - melling hv, gasket set- fel pro.

oh, wow, all the parts we talk about all the time here on the forum. imagine that.

and a comp 268 on a low key stock rebuild that didn't get balanced? sure. sure. okay. cool. cool. right. riiiiigggghhhhhtttt.

He looked around, where he can't find anything and stumbled upon something he supposedly cooked up years ago from a machine shop that prolly isn't around anymore. I'm sure he had this quote filed in the safe under the B's

I didn't read the whole thread, but had my flat rate book for labor out, just to give labor time stuff should take,
The original question is answered very bottom right.
Notice the work within the frame is in addition to basic overhaul.

34.7 hrs to overhaul in labor .
Cheers

That was only a planned build, I never said that it was built, haven't you ever thought something out on paper? Oh I forgot your way to smart and perfect to do that. You crack me up.

I wonder what year that is from.

Resurface a v8 head - 1hr : $9.00

That from a 1970 Professional Chilton Labor Guide.
Basic overhaul, then extra charge for the stuff in the frame.
Dealership times were less .

We would give a firm quote with these guides, and most often beat the time significantly, and give the customer a deal.

I hate to disappoint you but the machine shop is still very much in business. I went through one of my file cabinets and found one of my old note books in the bottom of the cabinet. I really wish that I was as perfect as you and junkyardhero are. How is it to know that you don't make mistakes of any kind?

let's see a pic of your notes.

when you said some mess to me about the 400hp 318 build i came with receipts. so pony up chachi. it shouldn't be that big of a deal if just had them out, you don't gotta go look for 'em. also, it's summer. where's the pic of the garage? there's no snow out blocking the way and the weather is nice!
