how much did you pay to build your engine? Im looking to build up my 440 with a stroker kit and all that. What other costs are involved?

Total price and performance?

thanks

A 440 stroker is gonna cost you.Hopefully you already have the block, heads, intake, carb etc..then you need a good tranny,t.converter, rearend and gears, suspension etc...Do you have any of the above to start with???

Figure block prep in the 600-900 range
Stroker kit 1300-2000
Camshaft hyd kit 425
Roller cam up to 1000
Heads anywhere from 900-7000
Assembly 350-600
Oiling system 150-800
Balancer...

You get the idea.

You need to come up with what you want the engine to do, then build it for the purpose.

i have a friend who just completed a stroked 400 with a roller cam and edelbrock heads. total ended up being about 15k. no track times yet but damn this thing pulls HARD!

Dig Deep !! But you get what you pay for. I have $8000 in my complete running 70 model 440. That's in the car with all things to make it run.
The build is one thing but when you get it home you have to dump more money in it to make it driveable such as headers, wires, alt, pullys and the list can go on and on. My 68 440 DQ motor is home at an expense of $5400 and on the stand but not in the car. There are some real goodies in it but at a very good price. The coated headers are on the wall at $800 and now i have to come up with brackets and all the misc. stuff. This should give you some idea of what to be ready for. Funny how we get it done here cheaper than on the west coast. Same product. Labor is cheaper i guess.

Stroker kit 1900.00
new cnc ported heads 1900.00
block work 700.00
cam 410.00
rockers complete 400.00
lifters 200.00
converter 550.00

already had every thing else

smile on face when blistering furds and chevys..........................priceless

abrsive's 500" 12.5-1, roller cam motor is just about done. i just have to port match the tunnel ram to the zeeker heads. he has about $6500 cash in it not counting our labor. oh and there is only 5 new parts in it.

Figure about $1200-$1500 machine work and then the price of what ever stroker kit you buy along with the gaskets and carb, intake, headers, cam&lifters&springs. around $3000+/-

The little things add up too like: spark plugs, belts, hoses, coolant, motor oil, filters, fuel lines, engine paint, gasket sealer, fittings, clamps, cleaning solvents, motor mounts, nuts, bolts, etc etc. Every time you turn around it will be $50 here, $25 there, all for little stuff you need. The next thing you know the price tag spirals up there quickly.

Ive got $6000 or so in my 408 small block and I still need a cam, lifters, pushrods, plug wires, alt, waterpump, etc etc. Then I bought a built 904 to hold up to it for $300 off craigslist. Allready had a converter. Its expensive expecially if you are on a tight budget.

I have a brand new( freshed ) 452 big block that I may consider selling.

I use this very basic guide for the builds I do: 0-400hp $12/hp 400-500hp $14/hp 500hp and up as high as you want to pay. For non factory strokes, add 20%. This includes everything, carb to pan, but not the fluids and filters for break in. As examples: 505cid 6bbl RB wedge, flat tappet cam, pump gas 590hp, 600tq $10K. 416cid 6bbl LA, solid roller cam, pump gas, 525hp(made 540 with an Air Gap) $9K 422cid LA, flat tappet hydraulic cam, pump fuel est 480hp (based on track mph/weight) $6300 446cid 6bbl RB (440+.030) wedge, hydraulic flat tappet, pump gas 450hp, 525tq $4200 (had the 6bbl setup already)

Add a grand for a big dominator and a ported intake
plus 300 to a grand for big tube headers
