I can not for the life of me crank the engine with my hands. I even removed all sparkplugs and it wont budge. 1966 ddart slant 225.
when i look at the main pulley, i see a deep hole in the middle that is not for any socket. There are some bolts on the front, but those arent centered so I cant turn those. there are also holes. how do you guys turn this over? I messed up my distributor position and now I need to find the TDC center in order to reinstall correctly.

help please

The crankshaft is drilled and tapped for a bolt. Put one in it and use the bolt to turn it.

Seriously? I didnt think i felt any threads but ok. Any idea what size bolt?
This will be awesome. Oh and how would you remove the bolt?or does it remain.

You can leave it there if you want. I am not sure of the size, but I believe it is the same as a big block.

If you still have the alt. belt on it and can muster up enough strength, I was able to turn over my slant by pulling on the belt.

Or, if the belt is tight enough, you can use one of the fan blades for leverage to turn the engine over...

3/4" by 16 TPI. Get one 2" long and with a hardened flat washer. I always remove it.. I guess 'just because I can'.

As above, to turn by hand, press hard on the alternator/water pump fan belt and then use the fan blades to turn over the engine.

It's the same as a small block balancer bolt. I just leave them in.

ok. so any ideas where I can find that size of a bolt? oreillys seems to max out a 1/2in bolts.

My God some of yall love to be complicated. Get a bolt, screw it in. Tighten it up and there you go.

Seriously? O'Reilly is not a hardware store. We have a really good Ace Hardware in town. They have a GREAT bolt selection. You might try that.

Look elsewhere. I got mine at Tractor Supply Co. (farmers use lots of bolts) But almost any old fashioned hardware store should have one. Also check Sears Hardware stores as they have a fairly good selection.

There is a threaded hole and it definitely is 3/4"-16 UNF.
Before I got mine, I screwed two screws into the tapped holes in the damper so that they stuck out away from the face and used a bar between them to rotate the crank.

You can also pop the transmission inspection cover off on the bottom front and access the ring gear to turn it over with a big screwdriver.

Thansk for all the help. I have tried to turn fan, and it just slips.

Went to Ace Hardware, nope. Went to OSH, nope. everyone seems to have the Coarse version, but no one has the fine (16 tpi)

maybe I am overthinking, and I can just rig up a couple bolts, slide them into the holes, wedge a prybar and move it. I just need to move it to get the line to hit 0 on the timing indicator.

then I can put the distributor back in the right way so it will start again.

Pull the spark plugs as suggested; it'll be a lot easier.

IN LA, and you can't fine a 3/4" UNF bolt....that's crazy! LOL Just keep looking.

How long does the bolt have to be? I may have one. Will be glad to send it.
