how to tell if distribbuter bushings are worn

I guess the only true way to get a distributer rworking at its full potential would be to put it on a distributer machine.... thats why this deal on the mopar performance distributer for 179.99 with custom curve ad phasing included from don at fbo looks very appealing to me.....
I mean it dont have to be spot on perfect i'm not racing the truck or anything its my hunting truck in the fall and my occasional pull my boat to the lake truck. It dont have to be dead on but i dont like this surging buissness ether. First thing tommrrow i will plug off the vaccume line and take it out and see what it does if the surging is gone i can count on it being the vaccume advance can if it is still there i need to go back to a two stage advance curve stiffer springs.
And it did baffle me as to why everytime i tried to run a echlin cap and rotor it wwould destroy the rotor the tip of it wwould be all bent and the inside of the cap would be chewed up from it. But i got a cap and rotor from car quest and i can see a little black spot on the rotor prong but thats from electricity bouncing off of it and the button on the inside of the cap wich fires the coil wire correct?

who knows maybe i didnt push the echlin rotor down far enough or maybe i didnt have the capon good enough. while my distributer was eating the echlin rotors my wiring wasnt 100 percent correct.. I found out i had full 12 volts running to the coil but i dont think that could screw the rotor up could it? Anyways the wiring is correct now and i havet ate a rotor since getting the cap and rotor from car quest. I dont know if car quests caps and rotors are of better qaulity then napa's echlin line or not.

Ok, I will bite.....What is a two stage advance curve?????? If you are talking about the springs inside, they work together not seperately......both open together......It is all a "one stage advance" to my knowledge....Usually in a spring kit you get two light springs , two medium springs, and 2 heavy springs..... So the two lightest springs would give you the timing all in quicker....next step would be one light spring with one medium spring.....next step would be both medium springs installed....next step would be one medium spring with one heavier spring.....and the last step would be both heavy springs which would make the timing come in the latest.....Am I missing something ??

i was refering to it being a two stage dvance curve because thats what mopar is calling it. I bought the spring kit from mopar and the instructions page says two stage advance curve. I wish i had it with me right now but i dont its at my other house. Tommarrow i will grab it and type word for word what it says so you and i both can understand it better. But mopar themm selve's are calling it a two stage advance curve whenever you use the big purple spring along wwith any of the other springs...

i'm uessing they call it a two stage advance curve because the lighter spring will start to advance sonner then the heavy purple spring. But tommarrow i will gra my spring kit that i got from jegs it's a mopar spring kit and the page inside says its a two stage.

So i plugged the vaccume advance and took it out on the road and it still ran like complete crap.... I dont know what tthe hell is going on wih this distributer but i have had enough of it, come monday morning i'm calling don at fbo and buying a brand new one and having him curve and phase it on his distributer machine.

For 200 bucks i'll have a band new distributer that is properly phased and curved and i can just bolt it in and go. I'm tired of messing with this distributer i have, plus its bout 7 or 8 years old so it wouldnt hurt to get a new one anyways.... If i could save 200 bucks and get this one working right i would but i have already put a new pick up assembly in it a new reluctor and its just not running right and according to my timing light im at 16 degrees initial timing and 34 total. I think my rotor might be phasing ether that or the distributer is hanging up on the pick up assembly or something.

If i bought this distributer i would have to change my wiring. And it has a strange piece on the shaft that my mopar distributer does not have... How would i use this distributer if i wanted to? Does it have an adjustable mechanical advance like the mopar distributers have? I would wanna be able to set the mechanical advance to 18 degrees so i could run 16 degrees initial and 34 degrees total.

I dont know that i wanna run an hei distributer...... I can buy a brand new mopr distributer and have it curved and phased to my engine and gear ratio and driving style for 180 bucks from fbo, then i can buy fbo's ignition module and coil and have great power all the way to 8000 rpm, not that i could take my 360 that high. But don has posted test resultss and he swears you need the right coil to get good spark out of this mopar ignition. I can buy the brand new distributer have i phased and curved nd buy his module and coil all for around 250 bucks and i'd have a perfect ignition system.
My buddy iis a die hard GM guy and he is always having problems with his hei ignitions frying modules left and right and those distributers are so huge the caps on them are gigantic i doubht it would even fit in my engine compartment.

You might want to look at the link that was posted. Of course it fits. It does not have a coil in the cap, you use an external coil (E-core type best). I haven't read of any problems with the HEI modules failing, but smart to always carry a spare HEI module, since small, cheap, and easy to replace. Perhaps your friend doesn't know to put heat sink compound under the new one. GM guys can be thick.

My Crane XR700 box failed last year (after 20 yrs) when driving my family home. I had an in-line spark tester, so diagnosed it quickly, and had a spare box in the trunk so we were back on the road in 10 minutes. As you get older, life teaches you to be prepared.

Well i already paid don at fbo for a brand new mopar distributer and he is going to curve and phase it on his distributer machine. under 200 bucks with shipping included. I wouldnt feel right running gm parts on a dodge. Don told me that these mopar distributers perform very well when curved and phased correctly wich mine will be. I gave him all the information on my engine gear ratio and tire size and the amount vacume it produces at an idle.
He said that he got all the info that he needs to get the new distributer dialed in right for my engine. Should be getting it on thursday or friday. maybe even wednesday.
