I am putting a new transmission in my 88 dodge truck. I know this is FABO but I do not belong to a truck site. I bought this transmission from a guy last winter I know he said it was for a 318. But how can I be sure that the torque converter is for a 318 and not a 360? It was a new transmission and torque converter that was never installed. He bought it and then he decided to go big block and I got a super deal on it. Trouble is I lost the guys number and he lives about 100 miles away. Both torque converters look the same except the old one I took out has two weights on the outside and the new one has one which is smaller. About 3/4" x 1" Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to do this twice.

I would take both T.C. to a few local trans shops and let them look at them. You might need to get a different T.C. and those trans shops could get you the right one.

I say go to a few cause like people aren't always honest:sign10:

If it's for a 360 it will have a piece of steel approx. 1/2" wide by 1-1/2" long welded to the front side (engine side) right between 2 of the flexplate bolts. That's what balances a externally balanced 360. You can carefully grind the welds with a die grinder and take the weight off. Grind the welds smooth afterwards too. The 318 converter doesn't have a weight welded in between the flex plate bolt holes so if there is no weight welded to the front side of the converter it's a 318 converter.

BTW: There are some thin weights welded to the outer perimeter of the converter. Don't mess with them. They are to balance the converter itself.

Hey thanks! I knew I could get the answer here. It does have the small weight on the outside but nothing on the flexplate side. I know he said it was for a 318 but I wanted to make sure.
