Soooo im in the process of building up my 72 Duster 440. Iv only had it a little less than a year and here lately i finally got around to doing some sergery on the engine after it took a dump on me a couple months ago. It aint street legal at the moment, use to be a drag car. No guages, no blinkers, no interior. i just popped the header andcylinder head off yesterday and from the looks of the cylinder walls its at least got 100grand on the block. (The good news) its got a nice looking set of 906 heads that show minimal usage from what i can see. I still plan on a 3 angle valve job and some hardened seats... maybe a port an polish too. :glasses7: but my question is, with such wear on the cylinder walls what would be the best NEW stoker kit to put in it?.. bramd wise that is.. i get that i wont know what size kit until i know exactly how much of a bore it needs and will get. i just havnt had any dealings with stroker kits before so im kimd of in the dark. I am going for minimal bore ( just as much as whats neccisary to smooth out the walls) but i want the best BANG for my buck basically! Im running a bone stock 727 reverse valve body and 8.75 rear so that should be plenty to hamdle whatever i can put on a factory block. Also my carb is being an ENORMOUS pain in the keaster..... its a holley double pumper on an edlebrock victor manifold. damn thing just dont want to tume right! Its old as dirt though. kind of wondering what everyone else is running on their 440 and if theres anything better yall have foumd from experiance to run on a stroked 440?

Bore size has little to do with Cu.in. size. But yes only bore it as large as it needs. The big question is what stroke crank do you want to start with? A 4.15 will usually drop in without much if any clearance issues. and you wind up with around 499 cu. in. Also as long as you don't go crazy on the stroke you will be able to retain the stock oil pump pick up location. shop around there are several companies that can sell you what you need.

Also it would have to be ran on pump gas, and my budget limit is around $3,000 maybe a couple hundred bucks worth of wiggle room... id really like to be able to make 500hp at the flywheel if its possible.

At 3K budget, You can rule out the stroker route.

you can get a balanced stroker kit from hughs for well under 3 grand. unless they`ve gone out of sight since I bought mine. 505"-.030 over-forged crank, w/4.250 stroke, H beam rods- drops right in, no grinding on anything. only thing to watch is oil pick up clearance, and "maybe" the boss where it screws in to the block. I went w/ a single line ext. pick up just cause I always wanted one ! the machine work on the block will eat he rest of $3500. depending on the cam and heads you pick, you can hit 600 to 700 horses pretty easy.---bob

Sure you can buy the kits for around 2000-2400. You going to complete the rest of the build with 600-1000 bucks? Not hardly.

Well... the $3000 isnt really set in stone.thats just what i have saved up for now. i told myself if i blew threw all of that id at least save up 1500 more before doing anything else. Im trying to take it in stride, not really in too much of a hurry. But id like to get it done with in a year if i can.

x2. Get your head out of the clouds, and build a mild 440. Tell everyone it's 500, 600, whatever horsepower you want. Because the majorty of guys that are telling you that's what they make, don't make anywhere near that either, and you'll need a lot of money to get the street parts back on the car. The addage "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" really applies to old cars. The good news is, you don't need "it" to enjoy them and beat on a lot of other ones.

PS - Thank you for your service. Your choice of employment speaks much more about you than any car will.

yea, $900 to a $1000 for the block, then roller cam and lifters, hi-flow raised port heads all add up bigtime. then theres always headers, convertor, trans., and a rear-end that will take it !! build a stock warmed over 440, it`ll be strong in an A body!

Moper hit the nail on the head! Thank you for your service and preserving our right to do just this, talk and the freedom to do it!

You do not need to go a stroker to get 500 hp:

Below is the link to my thread that contains links to Pop's 440 and other 500+, low compression builds, all that made over 500....then you need to find IQ52 and follow his comobs.
