I got my duster 90% done and its just been one nightmare after the other. Fresh 318 with a flat tappet cam and it starts off all the fuel fittings leaked well i fixed that then i had no spark finally just bought a completley different system and fixed that. Well i got it started and it has a huge vacuum leak in the intake. I figure i would break it in then get a different intake nope that aint happening because during break in the rings arent seating and its burning oil. Well it dies for like the 7th time and im just tired of this crap. Im always an optimistic person but this is stupid having all this little things laugh at me. Ill never buy a flat tappet cam again for sure. I think its still ok but this break in process is jusg a waste of time and effort. Im so mad i cant even see straight. If anything else goes wrong im parting this thing out and getting a ford and selling all my aquired parts. Rant over

Don't let it beat you man. Happens to the best of us. Im sure your flat tappet cam will be fine. One you get it running good, just do the initial break in.
Take a break re-group and start fresh.

i just recently finished putting a 72 swinger back together and had a ton of issues myself. take a day off and relax, when you come back to it you will be laughing at some of your issues. sometimes you just gotta walk away. hope all works out for you

Sorry to hear about all the troubles. Take a small break to clear your head. Then come back to it and it'll go smooth. I said a quick prayer for you. Good luck!

you wouldnt be havin' these problems had i been quick enough to tow that beast away , fenders , steering column , rear qtrs lol:D

Lol i think the steering column was the only good part on it. Im really thinking of selling it or trading it for a mustang. This is my third mopar and ive yet to get to drive one because of sfuff like this

Been there car from hell is what I called my dart when reassembling, but now I look back and say I won.

You are blaming the wrong end of the problem, my friend.

Every single problem you have described gets right back to YOU You need to pay attention to detail and learn some patience, and learn how to double check your work.

Leaking fuel fittings is a rookie mistake.

"I'll never buy a flat tappet cam again?" Correct me if I'm wrong, but engines used flat tappet cams VERY successfully since before the Model T. There is no reason they cannot be successfully run today, WITH SOME CARE, like careful startup and breakin, and using proper oil additives which have been removed from most oils.

The rings didn't seat? Why not? How were the cylinders finished? What KIND of rings? I REFUSE to use anything but cast iron rings, PERIOD. I'm not a truck engine builder, and don't need my rings to "worry about" multi hundreds of thousands of miles. CAST rings, when used with a proper air filter, will last most of us as long as the rest of the engine.

Vacuum leak? Again, WHY? I'll admit, you DO have to show some CARE in assembling these components. Slapping an AFB on a spread bore Edelbrock DOES require some special gaskets. Amazingly, they were "Right on the wall" down there at the horrid O'Really's Auto Parts.

I highly encourage you to buy a Ford. It will instantly fix all your Mopar problems.

yeah it was pretty rough , its a shame all those cars sat in the dirt & under water for so long . Got get inside the shop , still a pile of 360's & some 340's , curious to see what the underside of the black demon is like.....

I know i hate fords to but its better than a chevy lol i was just kidding about the mustang, i actually want a diesel to play with. I know i cant blame the parts themselves im just mad at how much ive put into this car and then all this crap happens. I want something running and driving to work on. And am seriously considering just parting this out and walking away since its almost winter and its just gonna sit anyway.

That black demon is pretty straight for the most part but if i remember right the section of floor i checked was rotten. I cant say wether the frame is or not but i wouldnt get my hopes up. The only cars out there that arent rotten are the ones that had wheels and tires to hold them off the ground atleast a little.

Take break And walk away for a little while.

Well said.

"Something running and driving to work on" Huh ? They cant be both at once no matter what brand badge is on it.
Sounds like you need to define your hobby. Is it driving one or working on one ?

Very true, you wanted something to drive you should have bought something that was running well and left it ALONE. Sure we have all made the mistake over the years of trying to drive a hot rod as a dd. Not talking a stock 318 with a shift kit, but a somewhat modified vehicle. Best thing that ever happened to me was when I was able to replace that vehicle with a dd. All the stress and head aches seemed to damn near disappear.

Why not ? Theres a difference between a car that needs detailing and minor repairs and a car that needs a total restoration.

If i had a running and driving car that i could work on like one weekend swap an intake or change out a torque convertor or stuff like that. Not a ground up build. For now im just gonna sell my surplus parts and go from there. If it keeps going south then ill atleast have extra cash for

Maybe pick up cross stitching? Seriously, it sounds like you have caused all of your own headaches. Go spend way too much for a mustang, that should fix all of your issues!

In your OP you said it's 90% done. This winter it could be 100% done and drivable come spring. Seems like a lot of work to me just to give up now, conquer the beast, you can do it.

Not all of the issues were my fault, leaking intake gaskets could be me or a defect in them, the fuel fittings i was talking about were all in the regulator which itself was leaking at the factory gasket so that ones 50/50 also, the oil line for my gauge breaking seems like it was weak line that came with it and it got over stretched when putting together so that could be weak line or me again, the ignition troubles seem to be a bad box since i switched to a mopar blue box i stead of a holley hp system and it worked.

Lol i ment 90% done to be driveable. It still needa a proper floor repair, quarters, tons of body work, a new wiring harness, a windshield and interior lol

You might clean the bug guts off the badge while its running. LOL

Your statment is pretty much exactly what I meant.
If one wants running driving and dont have the patience and/or skills to build it, save coins until you can buy it.
My own is a good example. You wouldn't believe all the things I would like to do to it and the money is spent, parts are here.
As long as I can wash and go, I cant bring myself to put it on stands.
If I did, I might be over anxious to get it back in the street and find myself thinking ( strike a match ) the way this guy is.
