been thinking about it for a while. pbly wont do it but anyone on here have it on their cars? and what are the pros and cons of irs? put pics up if you got any
 
Incredibly expensive to buy the conversion kit for the gains.
 
You better have a lot of money for the mods you are talking about. LOL

I all ways wanted to put an AlterK and a kesler 5 speed and a 440 stroker small block puting out 600 HP with 4.10's and weld drag lights and 4 wheel disk brakes into my car but the cost is so high it is just a dream.


But I here you. They have some very cool stuff for or cars now a days. It is just to bad it costs so dang much.

what made me think of it is there was a guy selling viper rear ends he had just sitting around. he had them up for like $100 a piece so get that and you could fab up most of the rest and do like 4 like with struts on the back and that would be it. it seems cheapish to me lol but a lot of fab work and stuff lol. i know it would be a hunk of money but for something that rare... lol what performance gains would there be?
 
Bill Reilly (RMS) has done a couple of them for the uber-hi end guys/projects using viper center/half-shafts......not sure it's worth the investment over a triangulated 4link or 3link setup
 
ok i cant decide lol it is far enough away tho lol. my goal is 2 or 3 to one hp to lbs. and around 1000hp i know really high hopes lol but maby. the irs seems lighter and could handle that kinda hp if done right. i like comments tho even if you think i am crazy
 
I hope you have about $50,000 to dump in the engine and drivetrain to be putting up that kind of numbers and have IRS.
I'll be passing through Cheyenne in a few days.
 
lol thats why it will be a long time lol i figure to have it how i want it no one would pay that much for an a body so might as well go all out and make it so i wont want to sell it lol

if you need anything let me know i heard weather was gonna not be the best idk if its snow or just chilly but if it dose get bad and you need something let me know. dont want anyone out freezing their butts off
 
There was a guy on moparts that put a thunderbird or something set up in his car. Not sure how well it worked for him though.

Bill did them in e- bodies. Takes a lot of cutting to make fit. Especially in an a-body. The custom shafts are big money also.
 
only advantage i can see doing this in an a body is to be different. otherwise you'd be spending a lot of money on a suspension system that you'll never use to its full capability unless you road race the car.
 
that is what i will do kinda. we see all the ricers and where we beat them in the straight away and cool factor(plus we get to keep our man hood) they have some pretty good advantages on us zipping thru traffic or street racing. i do not approve of street racing but would love to show them i got them beat in every way lol so driver/road racer is what it would be. it would save weight, and make the rear handle better right?
 

I'd prob try to do one with an 03/04 cobra IRS. They are in their own subframe(everything unbolts as one unit) that maybe if someone had patience and some skills could make fit an a-body. They are making upgraded axleshafts for them now that can take quite a bit of power. We never broke our 03 cobra when we had and it was making good power. Alot of guys that are drag racing these 03/04 cobras are switching over to the solid axles as its damn near a bolt in(the cobra irs subframe front mounts are where the control arms mount in a mustang thats not destined to be a cobra) so these things are out there for sale. Sorry for the ford talk here lol I built a few foxbodies(and one 03 cobra) before I got into A-bodies.

Independent rear suspension (IRS) shouldn't be that difficult for someone with reasonable fabrication skills.

C4 Corvette might be the easiest with the least amount of hacking and can be had for under 500 bucks. Trailing arm brackets mounted where the front spring hanger mount should be doable and mounts applied to the stock longitudinals for the crossmembers sound workable too.

Cobra Mustang stuff sounds expensive because of it's rarity, has a tendency to shred axles, needs aftermarket upgrades to address geometry issues, and would most likely require hacking out the floors from the rear footwells back, and back halving from the front longitudinals.

Although they would probably require the same amount of hacking as the Cobra stuff, the MN 12 T-bird (89 up) and Mark VIII Lincoln are far more affordable (I've seen the standard T-bird stuff go for as little as 125 bucks around here), use a fairly strong 8.8 differential, the Lincoln and Super Coupe T-bird even use the same aluminum case as the Cobra, the stock control arms pivot off the subframe and don't require trailing arms. The subframe looks to be adaptable (welded to) to sub rails connecting the front of the car to the back bumper, and carries the suspension pick up points, simplifying assembly.

And although I haven't done much more than superficially look at it, the Lexus IRS might also be reasonable option, size wise, if you're not running a torque monster.

You could always buy a wrecked Viper for a donor, hack the entire bottom out of the car, lengthen the Viper chassis, and drop the car around it, with or without the V10.

It's quite possible, even with all the work required to convert to IRS, even by a builder extremely knowledgeable in suspension design theory, you would find a well sorted out solid axle car staying with and even passing the IRS car.
