Is air-gap intake too much for a 318?

In talking to a mechanic about my 318 I am building, he seemed to think that a stock compression, 302 heads with 360 valves, the 268 comp cam, would not be enought to be able to use an air-gap intake. I also have a Holley 600 carb and headers. He sounded pretty sure that the intake was too much for this set up. Ouch....everything is already assembled and ready to install in the car. Any knowledge on if it might be a problem or not? He recommended the 2176 Performer intake from edelbrock. Thanks for any help.

The only reason it wouldn't work is a port mis-match may happen. I haven't ever seen 302 heads so I'm not sure on the port size. If they're 340/360 port size the Air-gap is the best intake to use. If their small ports he's right the regular 2176 performer will work better.

I bolted together a 318 just yesterday with 302 heads and a eddie performer.
I had the rpm airgap sitting on it and almost used it, but I noticed the mismatch so I went with the performer. It should breath just fine up to where I am revving it.

If I had some high compression pistons and 360 heads I would use it without hesitation.

Since it is already on, try it.

The only thing I can think is you wont get the full performance or potential from it.

Yes it is a bit of a mismatch on components, but who knows.

Try it, and let us know.

I would just use it. Your mechanic is partially right, you won't likely see all the benefits that the air-gap offers over the performer. On the other hand, I doubt you'll get worse results with the air gap then you would with the performer.

If you were going to buy an intake, I'd say save your money and go with the performer if you're planning on staying stock, but since you already have the air-gap I'd just use it and have it in case you upgrade your other components later.

It's done? Run it and see. It will be down a little on power, but you may not notice. Intakse can be changed easy enough...

I'd run the performer. The cam is small. And what Moper said.
