and a power steering column ? I have a column for a 1970 4 speed , but no idea if for power or manual . Can it be used on a floor shift auto , it does not have the lever you bring down to release the key like the auto floor shift column .
Thanks

I believe the manual column is longer, P/S is shorter. If I have that backwards someone will clarify.
You got it right
Manual is longer shaft to reach the smaller manual steering box.
Power is longer shaft to reach the much bigger power steering box.
All columns are the same and the shafts can be changed between them
So if you have a manual steering column you can change the shaft and have a power steering column

Thanks , guess next question has just been asked above ,by ir333 .

New upper and/or lower bearings are sometimes required.
I've seen several of the originals fall apart.
Good luck

In addition to already mentioned shaft dimensions and other info. Yes a 4-speed or 3-speed floor shift column is the same as a console automatic column. If your column does not have a lever at the bottom of it and has a ign switch in it then it is not a 70 it is a 71 and up column. All 70 A-Body Columns had the lever at the bottom even the floor shift ones as all 70 A-Body used a key release interlock system from the factory. Starting in 71 the key release was done but the upper housing turning with a small push lever cast in it and no longer used a lever at the bottom of the column. Also the columns changed quite a bit in 74 when they started to use a different style jacket and dash mount bracket as well as some other changes

Will have to inspect the column , did not see anything cast in push lever . Thanks

Here you go. This is what the lower column housing on a 71 and up looks like. Your column may have had 70 upper housing pieces installed on a newer column. This is known to happen frequently.
