Good evening, I have a 360 with j heads, a preformer rpm air gap intake topped with a 650 edelbrock. The issue Im having is when the car is "cold" it has issues with idle and acceleration, it wants to die, backfire into the carburetor or otherwise misbehave. Even with my temp gauge at 190 and having ran for a while these issues will still persist until it gets warm outside. The carb was just rebuilt and I have no vacuum leaks. Anybody have any ideas what it could be? In addition to all this when you floor it the carb dies before downshifting and accelerating.

The choke probably needs adjusting. I'd also look at the accelerator pump shot. "New" or "rebuilt" doesn't equate to "good". Also have a look at the initial timing.

The choke is correctly adjusted, the only way it runs right when cold is if the choke is slightly closed. This is a manual choke. the accelerator pump is fine so far as I can tell. My timing is good according to my light. Thanks for the reply

That sounds normal. What do you call "good" timing?

OMFG man good better best is not an answer. Give us some numbers. It’s obviously too lean or has a vacuum leak or both. Check for a vac leak at the base gasket. Give it more timing and see if it helps. Adjust the air screws. Kim

Check the float level. Should be 7/16". Check free movement of the floats AND needles [ do the needles drop down as the float drops from fuel being used?].

Idle enrichment screws (2), if the passages are plugging off you will get no results when screwing the screws in or out.

Then if plugged they are not allowing the idle circuit to bring in the needed fuel when idling.

After dicking around with it, I figured out my timing marks are off I timed it by ear and by feel and now I have no more issues. Carb was a small bit lean as well. Thank you for all your help guys
