Miss Judy Lilly

In 1974, Judy Lilly switched from the 1968 'SS/AA' Race Hemi Barracuda to a
1974 'Duster 360'.

The 1974 360/245 HP {refactored to 270 HP}, put the #3243 lb. Duster 360
at a near perfect 12.01 Wt/Hp Factor.

A 'near-perfect' weight break for "SS/MA" for the 1974 NHRA Campaign.

With 'factory-backing'................'Miss Mighty Mopar'

Paul,

I remember her winning the 1975 Gatornationals in that car but wasn't she running SS/LA?

Correct '75 Sport'

In 1974, she was running in 'SS/MA'. The 360/245 HP was {refactored to 270 HP} = 12.01 Wt/Hp.

In 1975, she was running in 'SS/LA'. The 360/245 HP was {refactored to 280 HP} = 11.58 Wt/Hp.

In 1976, she was running in 'SS/KA'. The 360/245 HP was {refactored to 290 HP} = 11.18 Wt/Hp.

I like to see this old photos of these cars.
The tallest tire that can normally go on an A-body is a 26", maybe a 27" depending on a the tire mfg.
Notice the front fender openings on her car, compared to stock.
Trimmed on it just a little.

I have a freind that runs two Stockers with some tall tires, asked him how he did it.
He told me it cost him alot of money to put them big tires on.

Mike,,,,,

How's this for size.

Judy Lilly ran with 15" x 10" 'Motor Wheel Mags'........ with 11.5" wide x 30" tall Firestone Slicks.

Trick = They used a 9 3/4" Dana-Rear that was narrowed by 2".

Anything over 28" tall in the rear on a Duster or Demon is pushing it without some trimming.

That 1974 Duster,

Was originally a 6-Cylinder with A/C.

Some Suspension Adjustments
* Front Shocks 'Koni' 70/30
* Rear Shocks 'Hurst' 50/50
* 1968 Super/Stock Leaf Springs
* Lightweight Front Suspension Components
* 9 3/4" Dana-Rear 'narrowed 2"
* M-W Rear Axles 'narrowed 2"'.

When the Ford Fox-body became popular, I told people then, thats the new A-body.
It took Ford that long to get it.
The A body can become a screamer with just a little effort.
Bargain hot rods.

Judy Lilly

In October 1975.........Running 11.30's @ 118.80 MPH

11.50 -11.99 Wt/Hp = 'SS/LA'

Now, that's flying.

I remember Her before her Mopar days when they were still using flagmen. She was a pain in the a$$...always cried flagman deceived her if she lost and the track personel would usually give her a rerun.She did end up being pretty successful in Super/stock but tried an early Pro Stock Arrow and never could quite get a handle on it. Dennis Mauer was a huge part of her success.( Just wanted to correct the type of pro stock car she had..was a Hemi powered Horizon)

I have met Judy a few times and she is a sweetheart!!!! I will post pics when I can find them :prayer:

Oscar,

The Chevy Small Block {350/255 HP} was dominating in 1972 and 1973
in classes SS/L thru SS/O.

It was the 1969 combination in the Camaro, Nova and Chevelle.

Once the 1974 Duster 360 arrived, the Super/Stock game changed.

That's good to hear- I've met "Dandy Dick" Landy (in 1997- spent time that day talking with his wife quite a bit, super nice folks), "Big Daddy" Don Garlits (in 1999), and Don "The Snake" Prudhomme (in 1994 or 1995). Prudhomme was the biggest prick you could imagine.

Judy Lilly set the 'bar' in 1974.

1974 = SS/MA
1975 = SS/LA

I met Dick in Hawaii spring of 66.
I was in the Navy stationed at Pearl Harbor.
We heard that Dick was going to appear at the local track near us and just had to see for ourselves what the new Hemi cars could do.
There was a local hot shoe there that Dick smoked.
They talked and Dick convinced him to let some air out of his tires to get better traction on his launch. He ended up doing a huge wheelstand and let off the gas too fast and collapsed the front end on his GTO!
I will never forget seeing that!
Man, that was a looong time ago!
