How many of you guys still have junkyards where you can roam free through them? Around here you can hardly peak over the fence without a dirty look, and if you happen to get into the yard and look at a car, it`s not without an armed guard!

the pick and pull up here is a pretty much free for all... they just check your toolbox on the way in and out. as long as your pants aren't rattling metal pieces they could care less

we have a chain of Pic a Part up here. The one close to me has a complete pink 73 Duster up on a 60 ft platform. It use to have a pink 70 Duster up there but I guess as time went on they realized it was worth something. Thinkin the 73 may come down soon and be replaced by a pink Newport. There is another wrecker close by that has 5 Darts, a couple of valiant ragtops but they're gonna get crushed cuz the guy says there is no money in pre 1990 stuff. Some ppl just dont get it...

Can Roam around "most" wreckers in the Victoria area no problem..There's one I just hate, (total assholes) but it's one of the largest yards so at times I have to go there. Everything in their yard is priced at least 50 to 75% :wack: Their not there to make anyones day, that for sure.

Another place is :thumblef: :thumblef: great, very trusting and their markup is about 20 - 30% max. Their far from the average rip off dudes. Got my remote mirror in very excellent condition for only 10.00 and bought a 73 parts car for 75.00. There so good I even felt sorry for the owner as his shop had all their tools and new welding equipment ripped off. Well that's my input.

Steve, are any of those Dart\Valiants of the 1966 variety? I've been looking for years for a parts car for my 66 Valiant, but with no success. I found a 65 last year but some of the parts I need were missing or different because of the 1 year status of the 66's.

Yeah these yards have the attitude-" I`ve got something that you need ,therefore I can be as rude as I want". Makes me ill !

Theres one of those yards here- but it seems like they always have that hard to find peice. One time I went in there and they had a Duster grill that I needed- I asked the lady how much and she proceded to ask if I had a 340 Duster, Duster Twister, ect, ect... all the different models so she could decide how much it was worth to me. I don't go there anymore- even if I really need something and can't find it anywhere!

We have several yards around here that are of the pick a part variety. There are a couple that are pick a part depending on what mood the guy behind the counter is. I am really burned out on looking for stuff though, seems all the things I am looking for other people have beat me to.

Most of our yards are run by car guys, so if you are looking for vintage stuff, they are happy to let you roam. Some even come out, and help you.

:thumblef: Guys, for years the people who ran "junkyards" as we called them were not treated with much respect by the community. Men believe me when I tell you that they are all millionares now, I know I am related to one. They do have an attitude!!!!!!!!!

Just up the road from you in Richmond, we have Chesterfield Auto Parts. They have one location in Richmond and another in the Petersburg/Colonial Heights area. Pay $1 to get in and pull your own part(s). All parts have fixed prices. Not as much older Mopar stuff in there, but every now and then, something ends up in their yard. Yards are very well organized and all cars are off the ground using old steel wheels welded together as jack stands under each corner of the car. Great concept, they should have these types of yards everywhere. Most of the cars they have are either donated (Kidney Foundation, etc.), abandoned, city/county cleanups of junkers in yards or wrecks bought cheap.

I live in the Dallas, TX area and there are a few pick u parts where you can actually see what they have sitting and such. The other places - you must submit a $10,000 wire transfer deposit 3 weeks before your appointment and pass thier application process and be strip searched before being escorted into the Holy resting place of junked cars. However, they have few if ANY pre 80's cars. There are lots of wide open countryside in Texas and you may luck into finding a parts car rotting away on a persons' property. Then you have to be lucky not to be threatened by rifle and/or shotgun to talk to the owner. Next, 1 of 3 things happen. 1-the car is not for sale because "one day" the person will get it running. 2-the owner thinks it is worth $$$$$$$ and won't take anything less than $$$$$$$ for it even though the car is barely worth $ to ANYONE else. 3-you get lucky.....woo hoo! Sorry guys....been going through wrecking yards lately and I USED to be a nice guy and getting the same bad experiences some of you have had.

which wrecker i need some parts that might fit on my scamp i'm in abby

Most of the yards in the Seattle area are pretty cool about going out in the yard and they are all pretty much willing to deal with you. The only problem is finding older parts (mid 70's and older) there is a 74 scamp in south end auto in Renton that is pretty much gutted and it hasnt been there all that long.
We used to have a place called Vintage Auto Wrecking up in Woodinville (bought my scamp from them), my dad is friends with the guy that used to own it and he had everything you could ever want in there (20's- early 70's), he sold it all to some outfit in Colorado, took 23 18 wheeler loads of cars and parts along with the guy that worked the counter.
That was the last good yard with in decent driving distance from me unless I wanna go down to vancouver, WA and pay too much and deal with the assholes just off I-5 North bound that have all the old stuff, or to Wildcat Auto in OR. and pay 5 times too much for something just because it came off a mopar.

I just have to post this in defense of a place I found in West Point, Va. It`s called Philbates Auto Wrecking and the only place I`ve found where you can go in the yard unescorted and pull parts. This place specializes in old cars from the 20`s to the 80`s and believe me they`re all there. 50 acres of cars all over the place.I`ve found all sorts of A-body stuff. Darts, Dusters, Barracudas, and the cars still have a lot of good parts. Grilles, tail lights , bucket seats, fenders ,doors, hoods,dashboards,etc...There are 2 buses full of nothing but old Mopar tail lights.I don`t believe he ships but if you`re ever in the area you should make a stop there. Bring a good pair of boots and a lunch, you`ll need it. There`s no organization to the place but there`s a lot there for all classic car owners. His phone number is 1-804-843-9787 and ask for George.Tell him you heard about his place on the internet.Happy hunting!

And if you had been so inteligent as to start a "Salvage yard" or "recycling yard" (PROPER terms to use when going to such places if you want to have them treat you respectfully) you to would be able to charge or behave as you pleased (not that being rude is ok, just merely pointing out) because YOU'D have what someone was looking for. I understand where some of you guys are coming from (NO, I am not a salvage yard owner, just been to WAY more than I could ever recall and have dealt with all sorts all over the country) but I think some of you need to understand where some of these guys are coming from.

and that would make someone wonder why a salvage yard person might be a little up tight. Used to be that a yard could have a couple underfeed BIG dogs to keep out the theifs, but a couple incedents where some dumbass theifs get eaten by said dogs and now these yards have little in the way of theft prevention (alot are out in the boonies as you all know) so they are constantly being ripped off.

Realize that a lot of the places that have attitude because they have generally dealt with a lot of BS from the comunity at large (the ole I don't want a junkyard in my neighborhood, and the low life's that think "Hey these guys rip everyone off so boo hoo to them if I get this {insert whatever part you can carry out in your tool box or pockets or toss over the fence and come back for that night} Granted they may get the cars or trucks or what not just GIVEN to them, but whether ANY OF U like it or not they still have bills, permits, EPA, taxes on EVERYTHING now a days (USA, only country to ever reach a taxation rate over 52% without the people rizing up against taxation without representation), fuel costs (you think those loaders, shredders, crushers, trucks, etc run on air alone?) wages, unemployment, workmans comp (I am a small biz owner myself) etc. etc. etc., and I am sure they wanna be able to get there kids the Barbi Super Center or the GI Joe with the Kung Fu Grip for christmas too, or maybe some roses for the wife because they worked too much over the last couple months to orginize a buncha scrap for whiners to come pic apart, leave hoods open after taking the carb air cleaner assembly or doors open after the get that glove box door they been looking for for the last 2 years.

I personaly have a buncha early 70's parts in my garage and get terribly offended when some one has the attitude that "gee, that's just junk (whatever part it may be) sitting in your shed/garage so it can't be worth more than a couple bucks and it will "HELP ME" out, as if I owe anything to anyone else on this planet other than my mother father and God. But on the other side of the coin I hate trying to get that harder for me to find part and someone thinks that I should pay them 10 times brand new (if you could find new).

I am not knocking/bashing any of you and I am not trying to be one a high horse, I just thought I would point out a few things that some seem to truly miss from the big picture, so that the next time you go to a salvage yard you'll have a little more respect for them and that in turn can help with the overall relations of the auto enthusiast's and the salvage yards. Remember, ESSPECIALLY for the 60's and 70's cars, that stuff is now more valuable as scrap steel and aluminum and for them to hold on to any thing at all THEY ARE DOING US A FAVOUR.
Peace
