Just Bought A 360 (again!)

Checked with Comp again. I know the tip on the shaft isn't the problem, just wasn't sure how to tell about the compatibility of the gears. Got a technician who double checked & he said my cam doesn't need any special gear & is compatible with the shaft I have.

Whichever piston's I decide to use I'm planning to have the engine balanced.

I was looking on Rock Auto today just to check what they have in the way of harmonic balancers. They list 2 different ones, one for an auto trans & one for a manual trans. Now I'm curious. Were the engines balanced differently depending on the trans they were hooked to? Rock Auto shows the one with the auto trans having the semi-circle cut into the back of it & the manual trans one has two small balancing holes in it. These are Dorman parts, 594132 for the auto & 594131 for the manual. Here's the pics.

If you didn't say a thing about the parts, I would have said that the top one is a internal balance unit and the bottom one is a extrenal balance unit for a 360.

I do not recall the balancers being different by way of what tranny they used. I also have not noticed this in the MP catolog.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing. Don't think I've ever heard anything about a factory internal balance 360. I'm going to go to my books & dig, but it's probably some sort of mistake in the Rock Auto listing.

They never made an internally balanced 360 from the factory. And I agree with Rumblefish that their shouldn't be any diff. for what ever trans. you have. The one in the bottom pic looks like the one on my 360 and like what I've seen on all the newer 360's from about 75 and up. The older 360's used a balancer that looked like the 340 cast crank balancers. They weren't interchangeable with a 340 though.

The one for cast will have "for cast only" stamped on the front.

That only applies to 340 engines. All 360's used a cast crank.

I have some 360 parts for sale , and also a slightly used ,purchased new flywheel - all for 360 magnum engine , not 360 LA - yes they are different -
also have some nice 340 x heads with hardened seats -
also full set of KB cast pistons - call me if interested 9083436645 jerry

Also , as far as the balancers , the magnum 360 is different from the la for 360 -
the have different reciprocating masses , thus different offset weight on flywheel and dampner .
