So I'm finally starting to assemble the new 414 for the green machine after the rods left the block last year and go to install the scat H beams on the Mahle pistons, No go. WTF?
Either the rods are to wide on the small end or the pistons are to narrow in the center or as my caliper says a little of both. Any one else ran across this before? I'm thinking about milling the piston for clearance but really bummed that I didn't catch this before everything was balanced.

Any better suggestions?

the newer mopar magnum engines rods are narrower...then the LA rods on the small end...

but you would figure the scat h beams would be narrowed to be used on either engine...

It's official, Mahle and Scat both agree there parts are not compatible. Neither of them want to make a design change to fix the issue though. Thanks.

Go with Ross racing pistons, they make one hell of a piston! I have a set of forged aluminum ones in my 340

How much need to be taken off the rod? It seems a machinist could surface grind both sides of the rods to create the cost of the clearance for a nominal fee, of course you might need to rebalance, but sure beats buying another set of pistons.

I just hit my LA rod little ends with a 60 grit sanding wheel on a grinder cuz I had to balance the parts anyways. Its just a tick....to fit some magnum stroker pistons I had. No big deal. Now here is the question: Are the magnum press fit pins a different size? My machinist had a HECK of a time hanging them into the rods, like "I dont want to do this because I think Im going to break them!" hard time....I ended up pressing them on with a 20 ton hydraulic press, a freezer and lots of grease.

If it was me I'd have the piston pin bosses widened slightly to get it done with the least affect on weight. If you change rods or have the rods machined I'd have the balance re-done.
