mini starter??

i forget what year starter to buy. i have a 98 ram starter here but the bolt holes aren't right. one is over sized and one is a bit under size. i remember running into this years ago too. do i need an earlier one? bolting it onto a LA 360.

The one large hole and one smaller is the normal small block/Torque Flight starter.
I’m running one on my 5.9/42rh even.

Curious why it won’t fit yours.

On bb, sometimes they hit a rib casting. Sb should not be a concern. The larger hole is probably to center the starter on the stud, provided you still have it installed on trans.

There is also one of the new GENIII Hemi starters that will fit, I believe. I think @Johnny Mac knows which one it is.

That starter should fit no problem...
That's the starter I have in everything...
The factory magnum starters are near indestructible...
Now up to $26 at pick n pull.. very easy to find if not already lying on the ground...
gloves, WB 40, an old toothbrush, and a roll of white paper towels.. Drowned in wd40, scrub, wipe off repeat three times and you'll have a like new starter...

I have one in a box from rock auto . Getting ready to put it on my 340 I think I ordered one for a 94 ram with a 360/5.9 I guess Il l find out...

My experience with these starters are depending the location when tightened some get lucky and they work. An engine with high cranking pressure or kick back will kick the starter to thy side. Then it will start wearing the teeth off the flywheel . I believe 1990-91 1500 ram at autozone the starter came with the bushing. You can easily make one and drill the other hole to american on yours.

I have seen some knock the nose of the starter off, but never seen the body get moved.
On my trans there is a large stud that accommodates that larger hole in the starter body.
I wonder if some used a regular bolt in that and that lets the starter move.?

My buddies 64 Polara racecar has knocked the end of the starter off 3 times. His 727 case finally broke and when we installed a different case, I chased the starter threads and installed the stud. No more broken noses, yet. He pulled all the threads out and had thru bolts to hold starter on.

My old wind up toy starter works fine I just want the upgrade. has anyone vever noticed in the old TV shows when a wind up mopar starter cranked a car over it didnt crank much they sound like its a quarter turn and instant fire,,,like ''rernt vrooom...." the whole re ne ne re ne ne re nene you hear sometimes is a car not tuned right...

My 273 commando car with the dual point distributor fires up quicker than my modern cars….if the corn gas doesn’t evaporate out of the bowls that is.

LOL! I know what ya mean a phenolic spacer under the carb helps.

Im kinda stuck there. I had to run a flat air cleaner base when I swapped in an AVS2 carb, and after I swap the performer intake on the air cleaner will almost touch/barely touch the hood.

All in the name of keeping the stock air cleaner. I could run a drop base 14” air cleaner and give myself some room for a spacer.

New starter won’t fit due to headers

If someone is feeling ambitious. 2006 ram 2500 with a manual trans. You have to drill the threads out of one hole. Or the dakota starter works great in most cases also.
