FOOSE ME
Just swapped out a trans 904 for 904 reverse works fine but 123 or not so great. In either gear 1,2 or 3 push down the gas pedal and the engine sounds like its gonna take flight but im not really moving at all. Any Ideas?

sometimes it takes more than 11 minutes to get a response,recheck the fluid level while it's warmed up and after moving the selector thru the gears.make sure you apply the emergency and block the wheels

If it's full on fluid the rear clutch assy. is probably toast.

Well it is full of fluid engine revs fine, if you put it into 1,2or3 it acts like it dosnt know wich gear to go to. The cars moves forward a little and stops and keeps repeating when in p or n it idles fine im wondering if it maybe related to the valvebody?

I have heard that they can be great or really bad! Some guys like em because they operate the same as the 727 and it wont rob horsepower like the 727 will. Then again some guys think there junk, im for whatever works and gets me down the road.

question is ....what was the condition of the trans before it was installed?
was it just rebuilt?... do you have personal knowledge that the trans is good?
has nothing to do with it being a 904 ....a bad trans is a bad trans no matter what model it is.

make sure gear select is not between gears ,detents,be sure if your using like a b&m shifter that you have the trans arm for a B&M . the 904 is a good trans been using them for years they are harder to fine convertors for than 727 but not that much any more lots of people using them now, not like it was 20 yrs ago . also make sure who ever build's the trans no where to drill hole's in case. some manual valve bodies have to have a hole drill in accumulator to inside of the case to work right just food for thought

Its just a stock trans it was good when it came out of another car it did sit for few years but it was coverd. I have checked the linkage adjustment but im going recheck everything today to make sure I did not miss anything, thanks to all that replied.

You didn't take it apart did you?
You did seat the converter all the way (should have had to pull it forward 1/2" to bolt it to the flex plate). I broke the drive dogs off the pump once and it acted the same... until reverse quit.
Nothing inherently wrong with a 904, millions of them on the road for over 30 years. Your is broken.

I know how to install a coverter! And to say nothing is wrong with 904's ? The lock up version was terrible and so was the late 90's dakota and ram truck tranny's! I would much rather have a 727 I can use but the budget will not hold that right know. I didi take the trans apart that wa in the car originally this one was rebuilt. One day on my way to work and the car sort of jumped out of gear so I put it back into gear and thats when all the trouble started. I just took this trans apart today and I found slag from the casing between the clutch drums and the housing and a bunch of metal inside the valve body so im hoping I can clean this one up get it back together and on the road by the weekend.
are you sure the kickdown linkage is connected and set up correctly ?

Sounds like your getting alittle snippey with people who want to honestly help you. 904's are good transmissions,and I had a lock up one in a ramcharger that 175,000 when I got rid it
They all go bad sometime regardless of what it is.
The converter question was a honest question. My brother and I didnt set one in right in a Mustang he had. We were beginners and f--uped.
The car would back up all day long, wouldnt go forward..lol
It sound like it was ran without enough throttle pressure , but thats just a wild *** guess.

If it has been sitting it could be anything? seals get hard and cracked and can leak, you can have a gunked up spool valve sticking i nthe trans too.
it is like having a ham in the freezer for 3 years. it can still go bad.
Ist off, disconnect the kick down linkage and make sure the kick down lever is free at the trans and not stuck inthe full throttle posistion
Next did you pull he pan make sure the filter is not plugged up etc?
Next and you need to pull the pan, check the low rev band adjustment
Next check and adjust the 2nd gear band.
other than that, sounds not good, my 1st look would be in the valve body, or i nthe tail shaft i have seen the governor valve frozen too.
But that would make a high pressure condition.

They never used a 904 in 90's Dakota's or Rams. That was a 42rh. Similar to a 904 but with o.d. Some other differences too. They did have their fair share of problems but not much more than the overdrive 727 version of that time era had. I have known guys that run stock 904's for a very long time and they lasted good. Yes the 727 is stronger of course since all the parts are bigger.
BTW: If you found metal in the valve body did you investigate where it came from? That's not good to find. sounds like something wasn't done right during the rebuild. Possibly a defective part was overlooked.
BTW: This is a pretty darn good board with alot of guys that like to help others. You don't know you from Adam you have to understand so who are we to know what you know. Such as if the converter was installed right. To take offense and get snippy with someone trying to help is out of order.

i agree with the snippey, when you say the tranny was fine obviousley the installer will get blamed. The 904 is like the /6 lasts forever my clutches were wearing so bad i would drive a mile and the filter would clog so i took the filter out and drove for 4 days untill i got a replacement and i picked up the new tranny with the the junk tranny still going.

I dont appreciate people asuming I dont know what I am doing! I can assure you that none of this is operator error. I also appreciate any and all help to point me in the right direction, like many other people on here my money is tight and im just trying to get an idea of what it could be. Everything came out fine and everything went in fine, as for the 904 in dakota's and ram's true the were spin off transmissions but they were still junk in my opinion. You don't have to agree with my opinion but it's my opinion, again thank's to all that replied with there two pennies worth of info.

Sounds like the shifter linkage was adjusted improperly and was running while in between drive and neautral,overheated the fluid and puked it's gut's....time for a trans rebuild and setup the shifter and kickdown linkage properly

i blue a 904 and drove the car with the bad trans to get a new 904 that i trashed in a weak so i puled it out and bult my oun 904 that works 904s are good but u get a fue that are junk
