My 340 Score of a lifetime!

-
So yesterday I was browsing the FB marketplace and looking at cars and engines. I came across a post listed as Dodge 340 Motor. It only had one picture so I asked the seller if he could post a pic of the Casting numbers. He told me he would in the morning. Well this morning he replied and it was a 340! I told him I would be on my way and fueled up the truck and drove to San Diego, 2 1/2 hours from me. Once I got their I met the seller. He was and older man and told me that his son wanted to build it back in the day for a 68 dart he had but went to collage and no longer had the car and it was taking up space in his shed. We loaded it up and I handed him $100. Yes that's correct $100. He had it listed for that and I even asked him if the price was correct on the listing, he said yes and the stands included.
It is a 1971 cast year with a set of X heads on it, which I did not know until I saw it in person. I disassembled it and Pistons look to be .030 over and might only need .010 more.

Talk about a deal! I always wanted a 340 but was crushed by the prices they go for. I know the 360 is bigger and I have 2 of them I was going to build for my 73 Valiant and my 75 Dart Sport. Now the Dart sport is going to get a 340!

Here are some pics of the motor. The Air gap intake makes up for the whole thing!

Wow, just wow! What a score. Manifold alone is worth more than that!

What kind of cam are you looking for?
3/4 race cam

Cam came in yesterday. I got the pistons and rotating assembly in. Next, I will degree the cam and the heads should be done tomorrow.

Congratulations on the score!!!!!

If you don't mind my asking care to explain your screen name? C2ndLTpigeon? If it refers to the USS Pigeon ASR-21 I had a shipmate assigned to that ship after spending time at two prior commands that I had also been assigned to.. Probably before your time....

I got the idea from a nickname that I was called when I was in high school about 15 years ag. When I was in high school I was in Air Force Junior ROTC. Some of the other Cadets thought that I bobbed my head back and forth like a pigeon when we marched in formation. I never saw it on videos but whatever. So I got stuck with a nickname pigeon and just went along with it and I was a second Lieutenant of the time. So Cadet would be the letter C followed by second lieutenant and pigeon. Used it as my name for my Xbox live account at that time, and pretty much kept certain accounts as that nickname since then.

Cool! And yup, well before your time... LOL... I've been out over forty years now... And yes, going along with the ribbing is the best way to make it go away...

And here I thought I got lucky with a 340 & VIN match 727 for $500 off a FB group like 3 years ago. Standing bore '72 block that was refreshed long time ago with TRW 10.5:1 pistons & a purple cam.

I didn't score as well as you, I believe
I bought a fresh rebuilt 94' 360 magnum complete (less accessories and carb) with a m1 dual plane for $750. A guy brought it in to a machine shop for a rebuild and never came back for it

I'm AFJROTC (retired) myself. If you think about it, about everybody got silly nicknames when we were in high school....lol. It's really just part of the bonding process. I agree with @1WildRT that you did the right thing just going with it. My Dad had a saying, "People can't get your goat if you don't let them know where he's tied!" It really works.

Alright so a little update.
I finally got my cylinder heads back from the IMM who did awesome work as always. Brian clued me in about how the heads I got instead of the older castings actually flow better on the exhaust side which is nice! Plus the later heads have hardened seats. And he found my misplaced X head cores I was able to keep as well. So good deal. I guess I fell for the X head hype thinking they were the best.
Anyway, I degreed the cam, sealed the lower. Got the heads on yesterday, and gave the engine a nice coat of cooperate blue paint.
All that is left is to decide my intake manifold, and find out the pushrod length. Then I can swap and replace the 318 in my Valiant.
Here are some pics so far.

I finally got my cylinder heads back from the IMM who did awesome work as always. I originally brought in a set of X heads and when I went to pick them up I got a set of 360 heads. At first I was bummed that the work was done on another set of heads and I was offered to have bowl work and valves transferred to the X heads if I wanted but after Brian told clued me in on how the heads I got actually flow better on the exhaust side I wasn't to bummed. Plus the later heads have hardened seats. And he found my misplaced X head cores I was able to keep as well. So good deal. I guess I fell for the X head hype thinking they were the best.
