Hello
I would like your input on Flat Tappet verses Solid Roller for reliability when used on the street. I have had some of the rollers break apart on production vehicles and I am leaning towards flat tappet lifters for this reason.
Thanks

340 replacement block strocked to a 416ci

That block has the raised lifter bores.....Right?(like the magnums)

I would run a quality magnum style lifter in it. Aka Hyd roller.

There's a lot of work to run a Race Roller. At least the last time i look into one.........which was some 10+ years a go.

We have a fella here that tried to run a roller in the MP 340 replacement block and there isn't enuff room to run one. If you try and grind away, you'll go through the block.

Corylis (liss?) is the guy. I met him at a FABO meet and he had lots-o-pictures on hand to show. He also posted them here. Do a search with his screen name. You should be able to find it.

Nothing wrong with a solid cam and long life. The biggest issue with a solid mechanical cam is the every one in a blue moon adjustment of the rocker arms. (Of course, if you use it everyday, then maybe a bit more often on adjustments.)

i run a solid lifter flat tappet cam, and always have,, i have never used a roller or a flat tappet hyd cam in a performance motor,, i use the tried and true 273 style adjustable rocker arms,,and just adjusted mine for the first time in 11 years, only because i had the motor out and the valve covers off,,they didnt really need to much adjustment,,

I have been running a solid roller in my car since spring…only adjusted the valves once. No troubles so far. If you are worried about reliability, then I would defiantly go with a roller. I had a flat tappet cam go south on me and fill my motor with metal shavings…never again, no flat tappet cams for me. Plus, rollers make SO much more power; it’s a simple choice in my mind…more power and no wiped cam lobes.

Either is fine. If you're going with solid roller, there are other mods I would do and the lifters should be bought from Brian at IMM (OU812 on FABO). Rollers will need more initial investment than flat tappet, which is why i tedn to not run them.

OU812 has the drop in rollers?
I think I remember hearing a small speed outfit had them Doug Herbert?

Call Cam Motion, When you say street is it going to be a weekend only driver or everyday?

Yes, Brian has Comp make him a nice set of exterior tie bar, offset cup, long body solid roller lifters.

Thanks for all of your replies. I am going to call the cam manufactures for the solid roller lifters to be special made for this block.I have read there is HP gain from roller over solid cams.

This car will be driven on Sundays only and at the dragstrip

Yep.
depends on the rockers too, could be more or less often.

Contact OU812 for his drop in lifters for the small block. No machining required.
