Oil pressure issues

-
I am pulling the engine tonight, will keep updated. A friend of mine has a complete 360 rering kit he is selling me for $50. I will get an oil pump and pickup screen at the parts store tomorrow. I hope to get this running again by the end of this coming week...

That's a real good deal on the re-ring kit so at least that's some good news. It probably wasn't pumping much oil at all with a silicone booger that big in the pickup so most likely all the bearings and rings are trashed so that kit will come in real handy.

Well, I pulled the main caps off first to see if there was any damage, the bearings looked great. Then pulled rod caps, bearings look good there too. Checked clearances with plastigage, all in spec.

Could it be that the pump was simply not primed right and ruined the pump only? I bought a new pump, pickup tube and we are reinstalling on Monday.

Found a spark plug wire melted to header, causing spark knock which I thought was damage to bearings. I have a heat protective boot protecting plug wire, but it still melted.

Here's a question tho... I had speedpro hyper coated skirt pistons installed... the coating is gone now on most of the skirts I can see. Is this normal?

Normally the coating would wear off very slightly. You've run it with low oil pressure (and thus less cylinder wall oiling thru splash). Plus, wiht the silicone and metal, I'd be wary of the cleaning and wall finish. I wouldnt worry about it, just chalk it up to lessson learned. To be cleaned, the cam bearings and the plug above the oil pump in the block should com out...

The skirt coating can about be scaped off with your finger nail so don't worry about that, heck a bit comes off just installing them, but like mentioned look for scuffing [real piston skirt wear] and on the cylinder walls.
How's the thrust bearing look?

When you put your NEW m72 or what ever in, first pour a lil oil in it and turn the impeller to draw it in.

Make sure the oil pressure relief valve in the pump is operating freely. If the relief valve is hung up your idle oil pressure will be about none.
