When mounting a oil pump in a LA 360 is there a gasket involved or some kind of sealer?

Yes, a gasket, and the new pumps usually come with a gasket, at least melling pumps do.
Don't use silicone.

We had a thread just like this several months ago.

If I remember correctly, the split between those that use the gasket and those that don't was about 50/50.

The pumps use a gasket, but it does not come in the gasket sets anymore.
There is a guy on e-bay selling the gaskets for like 3.50 shipped.
He is out of the north east.
I can provide you with his business info if you cant locate him on e-bay.

just put an oil pump on a 360 last night...used the gasket..smeared a little grease to hold gasket in place...bolted on pump..

i know in the pass i have not used a gasket...just was in the mood for a gasket.

Here's the thing.

If you mount the pump with no gasket, it might leak a little

But if you mount it with a gasket and the gasket blows out the side, now you (can) have a fairly large leak.

But these pumps output FAR more than most engines "need" IE the relief is open most of the time the thing is in operation.

I say gaskets are not needed.

...........I have never used a gasket there.............kim.........

Spot on as to why I don't use them.

Seen idle pressure and running pressures drop a bunch when the gasket failed. Had one engine go from about 30-35 idle psi to under 10... Lost about 25psi at RPM. No thanks and don't want the hassle of pulling a pan.
