I'm tired of looking at my paint finish in the sunlight. It has multiple coats and no clear coat. It's a great 20 foot car but it has dirt pimples and what I call an alligator or checkered appearance when viewed at certain at certain angles. I want to sand it down with wet 1500 in a circular motion, then wet 2000 in a circular motion finishing up with a straight line motion. Then I want to compound it in a circular motion and finish up in a straight line motion. Is that the way to do it?
Thanx, Tom

I hate to be the one to break the bad news but if it is checked (cracked like you just soaked you hands in thinner for a week) the oils and solvents in the paint have dried out and will just get worse. Multiple coats of paint will do that.
Does it look like the bottom of a pond that dried up?

No idea what kind of paint. The checking is symetrical - like little squares. You can't feel them, just see them.

forget the circular thing.get a sanding block, sand in a criss cross pattern, then buff it out, with a real buffer, not a polisher,or grinder.stay away from the edges with the sand paper and the buffung bad,if at all possible

If the paint is checked, it's done, unfortunately.
I would also bet it is some kind of nitrocellulous lacquer.
