Pinion Gear Chipped - is it ok to run?

New gears just installed, bought on forum, opened and found this.

Is this now garbage, and should be replaced?

Doesn't appear to be damaged in shipping.

Back when I was heavy into 4 wheeling I ran plenty worse than that but if that chip is floating around it can get messy.


The answer is yes you can run it but also yes both the ring and pinion are garbage.

The decision is based on cash.

As far as chips go it's in a good spot. It looks like is out side the pattern.

I'd re dye it and see if it realy is off the pattern. If it is out side the contact, how did it get broke off?

I would contact the seller before this all goes south.

if they were ran before they are a wore in for only each other they can't be mixed matched . that is a better pic .I would run it without concern .

Kinda depends a bit on application as well..
What is the ratio? What is the intended usage ? Daily driver, 500 h.p. down the strip, 900 h.p. and always smoking the tires ? ( I never really got that one. But then I'm a circle track guy. In my world, if you are "smok'n the tire. you ain't going nowhere).
I'm no 100% gear knowledgeable guy , but during 40 + years of circle track racing I have run worse and been ok. BUT ... That thought was always in my mind.... what if......
The pattern looks ok. Maybe not perfect but....
If I was going to use it for a daily driver.... Sure ..put it in.

It' broke off on a high spot of the ring gear, the more important spot is the low spot, I had a gear like that and ran it a year ago, and burnouts later still going. just clean out any metal and run it, 8 3/4 are tuff assssss shittt. But the seller should know better, and should of let you know about that chip.

That chip was caused by whatever method was used to remove the inner race from the pinion shaft when new bearings were put in.
If not careful, even the right puller can do that if the part that goes between the bearing race and gear to hold it gets too much pressure against the back of the gear when pressing the race off.

It is a new ring and pinion, so would it be affected by the installation of new bearings?

3.91, 383 4 speed, roughly 450hp, daily driver, upgraded from the 3.23s, and went with a bigger tire.

Not really into burn outs anymore, but was thinking a few with the 3.91s would be fun.

I went out again and turned it, heard a different sound at a certain point but not related to the chip.

Spun it faster with a socket, now I'm paranoid.

Does anyone else hear that muffled clunking right at the bottom of the swing of the socket?

Is that normal?

Put a little gear oil on them gears, that noise should go away.

maybe its just the picture but your pattern looks low to me.

not only low but inconsistent. The more I look at it the more I just want to throw it away.
But as to the chips
I would just die-grind it all smooth to reduce the chances of stress-risers.
And I would put my 430hp streeter right into that pig.
Shoot; with street-tires I have run waaaay worse.

But I would thoroughly check out the pattern and fix it as may be required..... first.
That video proves the pattern is bad. If those pics belong to that video, then you got some work to do; that's real noisy, it will be extremely annoying if you install it. It should be just about dead-quiet. And yes I hear your specific noise as well. Since it is in the same place every time, it has to be the pinion or it's associated bearings, or a specific location on the head of the pinion is hitting the diff-case, which is not uncommon..

I look at it this way. If it was new, then I expect perfect condition. I would expect money back including shipping. U can run them like that cause when the gears are rotating the load is shared but 2/3/4 teeth at the same time depending on the ratio. When hauling *** the crown gear wants to suck the pinion into it. Ok, I just went back to see the pattern, even though ur just showing the pinion I can tell u that the pinion is no where close to being right. Do not run them. Demand ur money back. Kim

If you put 1000 HP to it, it would break. But I bet it wouldn't break where that tip is broken off. I would run heck out of it. The teeth don't even contact there. If it really bothers you, take the carrier out and dress the edges with a grinder or a file and make it smoother.

I didn't even look at the pattern. I was lookin at the chip.

Seller said he'll do whatever, if I want to put it in and run it to check it out that's fine. If there is a problem he'll refund me.

That was regarding the chips.

No ill feelings, stuff happens, but between shipping and swapping it in then out it's just more money and time.
And I don't have enough of a knowledge base on this, what it's worth in this condition, what it would take to correct, etc.

To be clear, I'll do everything to avoid this turning into a drama fest, seems there has been an increase in those lately.

We agreed to return/refund to keep it simple.

It cost me a little time and money, but for those counting, here's a case of a sale that didn't go south, and I learned a thing or two.

Oldkimmer is right..
While the drive side of the pinion appears to be close, the coast side is waay out of whack, and probably why you have a chip. the coast pattern is in line with the chip.
The noise could be cause one of the bearings, or both, don't have enough preload so the gears are clashing around. (no control) typical sound for loose bearings.
Pin and carrier are wore, so the pin is moving..
If you can't get someone local, who knows gears sets, to look it over.... start over.
