I purchased this magazine "New" from the news stand in January 1966.

It has always been kept and stored in a safe spot in my home.

I can not begin to tell you how many times over the last 48 years that I have re-read the articles on the 273.

I have always wanted to duplicate the 273 on the cover.

Here is the link to the 69 Cuda 440 post:

Here is the link to my Proof of the Pudding post:http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showpost.php?p=1970567106&postcount=35

These two articles were in the same issue.

On the Cover:

Prettily painted and ready to romp: the 273 MOPAR falling out of this month's cover.
See page 64 for the way to make these "small" powerplants wail.
Below the engine, John Dallafior smokes off the line. John's 273 is the F/S Nat'l. Champ.

There is a reprint of that article in the HP books 'Mopar small blocks'. Love the ads too. Can i still get a Moon catalog for a buck?

What a great time to be 21 in America. The height of Detroits racing efforts and all that went with it. We didnt know what the future held.

Love the article and the ads. Thanks for the reminder. I have the article packed away in my Dart notebook. (doesn't everybody have one for their car?!) Although it is 48 year old technology, You can glean some good basics from those old articles. Those 3 guys pictured laid the groundwork for Mopar performance that we see today. Tom Hoover was a Mopar Motor Head and we as Mopar Motor Heads were damn lucky to have him on our team. He was a brilliant engineer. Thanks Dart67

Thanks for posting! Now to zoom in and do some reading! Pretty cool seeing old ads, I had an NOS set of tail lights and in the sealed box, they were wrapped in newspaper with an ad for the NEW 69 Charger...very cool!!

4spdragtop Thanks for posting! Now to zoom in and do some reading!

I am trying to find a program to make a pdf of the full size scans for easier reading.

I had one until my laptop crashed. Now I can't find it.

If I can I will post a pdf.

Herb,

Es Muy Excellente'

Great Read

Especially the 'hand fabricated' Intake Manifold with the '4' Weber 48 Downdraft Carburetors.

Dave Koffel only ran that Intake on his 1965 Plymouth 273 a few times in November 1965 at
Detroit Dragway and at Dragway 42 in West Salem, Ohio.

Great time to be 21..in 1966? "Gooooood Morning, Viet-Nam!" (Robin Williams) Ha, Just a jab, but I get your drift. Cool cars, cheap gas and decent tunes. Check out the price of the Herbert "Chry roller cam kit" @ $155 in 1966 is about $1,130 today. Herbert cam and lifters, $257. Minimum wage was $1.25, gallon of gas was 0.30. Wow, 4 gallons of gas for an hour of minimum wage work..BRING IT! 1985 was close, 3.35/hr and a gallon was ~ $0.89. Good times too.

Yeah, I was 20 in 1966, the banks were not about to loan you a dime. They drafted me in January of 66, fun times??

Herb,

Great Stuff.

Back in the Day, the weak link for the 273 was the Clutch Set-Up.

The Auburn Pressure-Plate {9.50"} was a poor unit, and was only rated at #1650 lbs.
of Coil Pressure.

And the Clutch-Disc {9.50"} only had 75.8" of surface diameter, with .114" of thickness.

At the time, only Weber Speed Equipment {Santa Ana, California} had Clutch Packages readily available.

What impresses me is the long tech articles -- 6 to 8 pages of solid text. Now you get 3 or 4 pages, most of which consists of photos of the parts they are installing (i.e. product placement). Good stuff.
