PSA: Junk Bumper Bolts

I was in the process of installing the rear bumper on my 70 GTX and needed new bolts so I checked Summit and they had exactly what I needed from AMD. Installed the left side bracket first and look what happened to my brand new AMD bolts when tightening them down with a ratchet and socket. These are some kind of Chinesium crap.

I just put used chrome bumpers on my Duster and went to Rural King and bought a pile of grade 307A (grade 2) 3/8” carriage bolts by weight for under $5 and bolted them on. I saw no reason to buy new reproduction bumper bolts…

I used AMD bumper bolts on my Dart a few years ago and had NO PROBLEM at all with the bolts. They must have changed suppliers?

Just one problem with those. It takes 8 bolts for the rear bumper and there are only 6 in that kit. Buy 2 kits and have 4 extra bolts when you're done.
All of the restoration places that sell bumper bolts advertise their bolts as {SS capped bolts) just like AMD, so I'm thinking they all get them from the same supplier. I found some chrome plated grade 5 bolts on fleabay that I'm going to try.

I would think you want the plating or they will rust... factory bolts will rust on the threads etc.

I just get the SS carriage bolts. Never had a problem.

Oh oh. I just bought a set for my front bumper off of Amazon after my 'bumper bolt set' from AMD only had enough bolts for the rear bumper.

Send him an email. He'll give you only what you need.

Fleebay says his store is shut down for vacation or something. I got bolts from MONSTERFASTENER on fleebay. They're supposed to be chrome plated grade 5 carriage bolts. MONSTERFASTENER's store has over 20,000 items and I would say 80% is fasteners of every kind you can think of. Brass, plastic, SS, and nuts to match. Says they are in Portage, MI.
I'll post up what they are like after they get here.

I use 316 stainless steel carriage bolts from McMaster-Carr. The heads are shiny and will never rust or corrode head or threads.

Tried once but no answer. Will try again. I'm sure they will find out from Summit too. Why can't people list an email address for contact any more. Wouldn't have to play phone tag then.
