Quality greasable u joints

-
Dana Spicer. But be careful about reboxing. A big truck parts store will be your best bet for genuine parts.

Dad n I put new ones in when we got it, but both non greasable. Driveshaft is out for 904 removal and both joints need replacing(tight).
I fingered Dana Spicer, hoping they make for greasable for it.
Me and you both. I've always used them with the grease fitting, too. I've worn some out so they squeaked and popped, but never broken one.

Also the greasable has zerk in the cap(cheaper to make) and not in the body. SKF i would "assume" would be quality, BUT they make me leery due to price...
I'm with ya there. I don't see any on that list I would want other than Dana. Most manufacturers I haven't heard of. I don't have a TRW catalog with U joints in it. Otherwise we could look there.

Who makes them? Looking for our 67 cuda 904 and 8 3/4.
Thanks
Steve

In general, Spicer (Dana) are the best quality universal joints. Most older replacement universal joints from Chrysler, since they stopped making their own, were supplied by Dana.

Spicer replacement universal joints for the small 7260 series universal joints include the following:
  • 5-1306X
  • 5-1307X
  • 5-3228X (grease fitting in cap)
  • 5-789X (heavy duty without grease fitting)
Spicer replacement universal joints for the small 7260 series universal joints include the following:
  • 5-1309X
  • 5-811X (heavy duty without grease fitting)

Older US made products from Chrysler, Precision, TRW, McQuay-Norris, Borg-Warner, Rockwell and some others are good. Neapco appeared to be made well, but I've had fitment issues with them.

Side Note:

Regarding Moog/Precision universal joints, although Moog quality has now become questionable at best, an older US made product is good. For recent products, the quality can be bad, but if still made in the US, might be okay. Perhaps not a good as it once was, but likely better than an overseas produced part.

For a bit of insight into the decline of Moog/Precision universal joints, and other parts, quality, refer to the following:
  • Torque Manufacturing was a manufacturer of universal joints that became part of Precision in the early 1980s. Precision also made universal joints and driveline components. Both were good quality USA manufacturers.
  • Moog, the maker of suspension components, acquired Precision in the latter 1990s. Initially, Precision remained the same good quality product. It was still sold under the Precision brand at first, but became Moog Precision.
  • Moog had been acquired earlier by Cooper Industries, and all manufacturing was still good.
  • Federal Mogul, historically a bearing and other component manufacturer, had begun branching out and acquiring other companies such as Sealed Power and TRW. Both of these were broad range companies who also made universal joints.
  • In 1998, Federal Mogul acquired the automotive products of Cooper Industries, including Moog/Precision.
  • As Federal Mogul grew, they started shifting production overseas, and quality began declining.
  • In 2018, Tenneco (the maker of Walker Exhaust, Monroe shocks, Wagner, etc.) acquired Federal Mogul. Tenneco created a new parent company for the combined automotive products entities called DriV. At first,it seemed the quality slip of Federal Mogul brands might stop, or even reverse.
  • In 2022, Tenneco itself was acquired by Apollo Global Management. Apollo is a financial/asset management firm. As can be the case, when a financial handling company purchases a manufacturing company, the future might be okay, but it can also be uncertain depending on the firm's intent. Apollo/Tenneco shut down a Moog manufacturing plant in Boaz, Alabama in September of this year.

In a normal driving car, they are fine. I have twisted or broken a greasable u-joint and messed up driveshaft and a couple of things around it. I just don't use them anymore.

Imagine the damage/injuries if a front U joint failed with the car going at speed.....

I only use the non greasable Dana heavy duty u-joints. My drive shaft guy swears by them and the driveshaft balances out easier.

Imagine the damage/injuries if a front U joint failed with the car going at speed.....
I will be putting a driveshaft loop on my Demon......That scenario has always been in the back of my mind. The car is 100% street.

Most U joints on most RWD cars are greaseable. Even though that includes just old cars and trucks now days, A "weak" greaseable
U joint doesn't break and cause a catastrophe. And that's millions of them. Any failure could happen but rarely does. U joints usually fail from lack of lubrication.
