Question about carbs for tunnel rams

-
I have a question that's probably going to sound stupid but here goes....
As you can see from pics, i'm running velocity stack air filters, but i want to run these like in the pic below >>> View attachment 1715436196
But my problem is these are 9 inch diameter and from what i can tell, they wont fit as thay are slightly too large. The stacks are 8.75 inch diameter see pics >>> View attachment 1715436197 View attachment 1715436198
As you can see, i have sat a 9 inch top on one of the stacks and the difference is visible. Anyone have any suggestions as to why it wont work on mine? I would have thought all tunnel ram tops would have the same centre point to point (centre of carbs). Thanks in advance.

As you have found, not all tops locate the carbs in the same postion.

Two things. Inline mounted carbs as a general rule are mounted closer together to save space and make linkage hook up easier.

Sideways mounted carbs can be mounted further apart because carb length is no longer an issue.

Second, those filters with very small filter area like you are using are power eaters. They don't have near enough area to feed a weed eater, let alone a big engine.

The velocity stack design is awesome. The small filter area is death to power. I've found as much as 100 HP on a 572 Chevy at 6500 RPM by just pulling the filters out of the velocity stacks.

Just a FYI.

When you say "the small filter area" do you mean the thin foam piece on top?
I'm happy to run a different filter if you have any suggestions....

The thin foam isn’t very good at air flow and piss poor when on fire from back fires. It just crumbles into the carb making a mess.

Secondly, the area of filtration is small due to only having the top at a small diameter.

Scoops are normally used and solve your issue. I do t know if that’s for you.

hoping to avoid using a scoop (at least for now) i know there's a 6 inch filter but next size up is the 9 inch, which is too big, an 8 or 8.5 inch would be perfect.

It may end up being a fruitless search, but I’ll take a poke around. Good luck with the search.

Car looks great.

Id love to see in the trunk and back seat area?

Just what all did you cut out to get so low?

Not much to see, the pics of the car driving at the show there was a couple of people in the back so i guess that made it look a little lower than normal, also i have 1.5 inch lowering blocks fitted.
Nothing cut out at all.

Thats one good looking dart.

You must run a short small tire?

I do love the stance.

I had those same cheap filters when I first got my dual quads.. get rid of that junk before it catches on fire ruins your motor..

well i think the verdict is in! They're gone!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember firzt getting my dual quads and not warming the car up and taking my wife for a ride and got a backfire and the top pop off and bounced across the top of the car and all over the street.. just trying to save you the embarrassment... And the possible chip in your paint on the roof when it flies of...

I've had an idea! Oh oh hahaha......so i already have one of these filters, (see pic),

If i was to buy another one, and "shave" just a little bit off the top and bottom lips of both of them, like this >>>

i believe it should fit, as it's only bigger by quater inch, and i dont even think it would be very noticeble, i'd put both shaved sides facing each other.
What do you all think? Be gentle lol.

Also if that cheap sponge for a filter catches on fire it gets into your motor and ruins the carburetor at the very least

Hey jpar thanks for that, believe me i am taking it all on board.

Shave em to fit.

Who cares?

I dont even run air filters. I doubt you will have an issue unless you want to drive 50,000 miles on your engine?

Joe! Flippin brilliant! Yes, a pair of those filters. Excellent!
Definitely! Both shaved sides facing each other. It’ll be looked at a lot so take your time on making it look good.
