Rear-end buy price?

Hey Boss Vega

Have you found anywhere where the measurements are listed for the Jeep rears? I've looked for 2 hours and can't find them. There are a few Dana 44's in this area and it might be a good choice to grab seeing as 8.75 are so rare around here.

Coyote Jack theres a post on BigBlockDart about this. there are a few problems

Dakota rear ends are to wide, I allready looked into that option. And they have a weird bolt pattern thats hard to get aftermaket rims for.

Well why didn't he just say so? Instead of making it so freakin hard to understand for a noob like me.

The wheel mounting surface measurement is wider that your flange to flange measurement. WMS is where the rim actually contacts the drum and the flange is behind the drum. At least thats how I always figured it was

The only bad thing is the guy wants $1000 for it

Don't walk away from that deal. RUN LIKE HELL! $1,000? I paid $1,600 for my car as a rolling shell with an 8.75 w/ a 489 4:10 SG in it. For the extra $600 I got a whole car :D

Wow......

Yea but why would I want to pay $1000 + maybe around $450 for the bigbolt axels I need, +$250? for the gears I need, + whatever else. So far thats $1700 and I don't even have it in the car yet. For that kind of money I would prefer to go buy a brand new rear end.

I think Hawaii has it right. The flange is behind the wheel mounting surface which would be the outside edge of the axel. I am going to look into this Dana 44 some more. It appears to be a pretty stout piece. It's an 8.5 inch rear and most of them came as sure grips. The big advantage I see so far is the price and availability. They go for 150 to 250 Can. around here and they are plentyful compared to 8.75's.

I am kinda interested also so keep us informed. My only worrys about such a swap finding axels with the correct bolt pattern.

damn for $1000 you could probably get a b,c, or e body cut down and still have money left over.... or beter yet have a 9" set up for an a-body... we picked up a 8 3/4 abody housing for $140 at e-town this summer....

From what I have been able to gather from the Jeep crowd, many of the Jeeps come with a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. The only drawback that I have been able to uncover so far is the spring perchs have to be moved. I have also been able to find out there are 2 different carriers. One for gears up to 3.92 and the other for 3.92 and above.
If anybody finds out more post it here for all to see.

I will check out some 4x4 forums and see what I can find. I am still confused which year and make of jeep does this rear end need to come from to be the same width?

I was thinking the 82-86 CJ-7 and Scramble with the 55" measurement. That'll bring it in about an inch on each side and with the offset hangers and shackles might make give you more selection on rim width/backspacing.

Went back to the bone yard today that I was at last friday where I thought some 8 1/4's were hiding. After hours of searching around I found one but the perches were on the top and the tag said it had 3.73 gears. So I figure it must have been from a jeep or truck. So I took some measurements and was about to leave and I happened across one of the owners I had never seen before and he asked what I was looking for. I told him I was either looking for an 8 1/4 or 8 3/4 for an abody. He told me he had both and he took me to an early 60's charger with an 8 3/4 in it so I bought it. I am gettiing it for $300. I know coming from a b-body I will have to move the perches in but for $300 I can deal with that. Has small bolt pattern so I am going to have to change the axels. It has the 741 case but for what I am pushing for horses that should be good enough. He thinks it has 3.55 gears and that it maybe a posi unit. Which is better sure-grip or power lok? I am picking it tomorrow morning so tomorrow after noon I can crack her open and see what she is sporting. I am so exciting I dunno if I will be able to sleep tonight! :bounce:

Thanks! Are u-bolts hard to find? I plan on either going with either caltracs or MP super stocks springs do either give you new bolts? Also whan do you mean by shock mount? isn't that welded to the rear end?

Are u-bolts hard to find?
I am still looking for some myself. I have seen used ones on eBay before, but always for more than they are worth. I have not found a source for new ones.

Also whan do you mean by shock mount? isn't that welded to the rear end?
Here is what the shock mounts look like.

The hole spacing matches the U-bolts, which are 3". It goes under the spring.
