Guys, there are a LOT of rear main seals leaking out there........too many to count........I can't tell you how many cars I've looked at with the problem........A real pain in the brain, and a source of constant drips in the driveway and garage........and it's expensive to have them changed, unless you just happen to be into a rebuild anyway.

I've seen a couple of additives that swear they can seal up a rear main.......Bars has one I believe, and who knows what others.........

What I want to know is IF there is a treatment that actually works and isn't plain ol' snake oil.

Is there ??? Huh ???? :coffee2: (I'll wait................................)

I used a product by Casite years ago(are they even still around?)it worked
for about a month than it leaked worse than it ever did before. They swell
the rubber but after time it breaks it down and makes it worse.Never had luck with the engine ones but have with the transmission,KW Trans X,life saver!

Mine drips not a gushing flow by no means but it leaks! Just enough to piss you off and have to whip the floor. The 273 I had leaked and now the 360 leaks also. I had to use a different oil pan on the 360 and doubled checked that the rear main cap had sealant between it and the block. I re torqued the pan to specs after a few heat cycles and it still leaks.

I'm not a big fan of leak stop additives but sure would like to cure this little leak I have. I thought it might be back pressure because of the 10:7 compression but don't see any evidence of that around the dip stick or valve covers. The PVC and baffles look healthy. I know what you are saying pastortom. I'm thinking of letting my mechanic guy fix it for me because I'm at the point of not really knowing another way of fixing it. Suggestions are appreciated.

When you replace your seals use a good seal. Viton Resists Abrasion and Heat

Viton combines the abrasion resistance of polyacrylate and the heat resistance (450° F, 230° C) of silicone. It is required on many high-temperature engines.
Fel-Pro provides seals made with Viton for rear main seals on many high-temperature engines.

I use Viton seals and haven't discovered a leak yet. Just my opinion.

My 318 leaked when I used synthetic oil, just a drop or two. I tried good regular oil and the leak stopped! I'll use a half mix of regular and synthetic next time and see. The motor has all new seals and gaskets. I think synthetic will leak past anything..LOL

I would think as much effort as I put in making sure the damn thing wouldn't leak.. that it shouldn't! The thought was always in my head "I'm going to make sure this motor doesn't leak because my old motor did!"

I would chaulk it up to poor ring seal, and assembly error in most cases. Unless one is careful, some oil will inevitably get some oil residue on it during assembly. Then, it doesnt seal. The lip seals the crank, but the seal doesnt seal against the groove, or the ends. I like rope seals... A royal PITA, but they dont leak...
