I recently purchased new carpet for my 68 Cuda FB (OER brand) and the front section doesn't fit anywhere close to correctly. When laid in place where the foot wells sit in their place it is humped up in the middle really bad like it's way too wide. Weird part is the rear section fits perfect. I googled carpet to try to find a different supplier and ran across a thread where someone else purchased the OER brand from Classic Industries and had the same problem according to his feedback. Has anyone here used a carpet that fits correctly? If so what brand is it?

It may have been boxed wrong. It may have carpet switched for floor shift manual trans in an auto trans car & vice versa. (Could be why only the back section fits good) Also, the front section needs to be trimmed along the front edge (Under dash) & along the sides (Sill plate area) for proper fit. My guess, it was just boxed wrong if you ordered the correct carpet.

It’s actually a universal carpet where it’s made for a bench seat car and you trim it for the console and punch holes for the seat bolts. I trimmed it for the console and laid it in place then discovered it is too wide. I thought of it being boxed wrong then I read where another guy had the same problem so I wasn’t sure.

Thanks for the replies guys

@LST46 , the box containing the carpet, can you identify the manufacturer? For the Mopar line, there is only one manufacturer making the molded carpet kits. That would be ACC, Auto Custom Carpets. Not sure what OER is selling, but I know that they use some of the same part numbers for the various colors as supplied by ACC.

If it was a universal kit fitting either a manual transmission or automatic transmission, then that would explain the issue. The ACC kits are molded as OEM to fit the floor pan.

None of the carpet kits are precut for the seat studs, console hardware, dimmer switch, etc.

We have worked for a number of years with ACC as all of the carpet is manufactured 45 miles from us. Since I deal directly with a Senior Manager of the company, I order all of the carpet kits untrimmed. That gives the installer extra material so that the carpet extends up the firewall like it did originally and gives you the extra material so that you can move it around slightly to best fit the floor pan.

I’ll look the box over and let you know what I find

Unfortunately, since you have trimmed it, they won't take it back. You can try calling them, but I don't think you'll get far. I have always used ACC.

You may be right, but it doesn’t cost anything to ask. I bought it through summit and they’ve always been good at standing by what they sell. I’ll post an update when I call them

Did you order it with the mass backing? I found that it fits better with the backing. As said above, I think ACC makes everyone’s carpet and it is drop shipped from them no matter who you order it from.

Yes, it came with the backing

It’s probably been 5 years since I did my Barracuda, but I remember it fitting pretty good, but with a lot of trimming.

The standard carpet kits come with a backing known as "shoddy padding". Additionally, you can add a heavier rubber backing to the entire carpet piece and that is known as the "mass backing". So if you do order the mass backing option, you will still get the shoddy padding that gives the carpet kit some "softness" under the areas in which your feet rest. The mass backing is more of a barrier for sound or heat/cold. All of the modern cars uses the mass backing to achieve the noise and heat reduction.

Thanks for the clarification. When Mike mentioned it I thought he was just talking about the standard insulation pad. I didn’t know there was anything else. That being said mine does not have the mass backing. I have added some good insulation but not knowing what “mass” backing is really like mine may not be as thick. I have some extra so I may try adding another layer and see if it helps

The mass backing option adds a good amount to the price, but I think it is worth it. It also helps the carpet hold its shape better. This make the installation easier.

@RPM440+6 I have attached a picture of the label on the box. It doesn’t say a mfg as far as I can see but there’s a small label over the big label. Maybe you’ll be able to identify it by the part number. Thanks

That label has the Auto Custom Carpet (ACC) part number on it.

See the screenshot below from Rock Auto.

@LST46, your picture of the label identifies that the OER carpet kit is using the ACC part number for a 67 to 69 Cuda Fastback with the automatic transmission. I am pretty sure that ACC is the manufacturer and that ACC is just placing the carpet into an OER box for advertising purposes and name recognition for OER. The ACC name and part number is listed in two different locations on the label. I have attached a link to the ACC site for the particular part number 11497.

1967-1969 Plymouth Barracuda Auto with Console Strip Pass Area | Auto Custom Carpets

@S'cuder, posted as well that Rock Auto is using the ACC part number and description for the kit that they carry. For molded Mopar carpet kits, it is all coming from ACC.

@LST46, if your car is an automatic with the factory floor pans, then the front cargo carpet section should fit relatively well to the floor pan. If your car is a four speed or modified to a manual transmission floor pan, then this kit will not fit your floor pan well as it was molded for the "automatic" application. Not sure what your car is. But mistakes could happen and a four speed front carpet kit could have found its way into the box. No ideal on what your initial order was with Summit.

Also to the general public, take a look at the label that is attached to the box describing the contents of the box. You will see the manufacture date / order date. If your at a show and see a carpet kit for sale, check the date out. If it is a couple months old or even years old, getting the wrinkles out will most probably require more effort with the installation. That is why I tell my customers to not buy the carpet until a week or so prior to the installation and as soon as the kit is delivered, remove it from the box so that it can "relax".

Thanks for the info rpm440+6 and S’cuder. My car is a FB automatic with console with the original floor pan so it should fit , unless like you mentioned rpm, that it could have been boxed wrong. Since I ordered it for an automatic car should it have been notched out for the console? I bought it and opened the box about 2 weeks after. I laid it out on the garage floor for a couple days before installing it. Maybe that wasn’t long enough but it appeared fairly wrinkle free. After seeing it didn’t fit correctly I even tried setting a heater up in the car, closing all the windows and doors and ran it for 2 days with some weight sitting in the foot well areas to try to get it to fit into place better but it didn’t make much difference. The heater had it up to about 90 degrees inside so I would think that would be enough. I appreciate all the input and suggestions

@LST46, can you post a picture of how the front part of the cargo carpet fits the floor pan? It should fit relatively well to the transmission hump. Carpet kits do not come precut for the console brackets, seat studs, dimmer switch, seat belt bolts, etc. Those slits and cuts will need to be done by the installer.

ACC will not sell just a front or rear section of a carpet kit. When the carpet kit is made, one piece of carpet is loaded into the mold and it is formed under one step for the front and rear sections. Once it is molded, it is split / cut into the front and rear section. If you tried to mold say just a front section, there is basically no way to hold it in place without it possibly shifting and then being out of sorts for proper orientation. After it is cut in half, it is ready for the edge to be serged if necessary and trimmed for the rocker and firewall fitment. Since I deal directly with an assigned rep, I will ask that the carpet to be left untrimmed on the sides and top. This gives the installer extra material that helps to make for a better install in my opinion.

I Purchased ACC brand with Mass backing for Auto Trans 69 Fastback Console fold down rear seat from Pro/Fit Auto Interiors - Classic Interior Kits, Upholstery and Trim , They had the best pricing in 2013 hands down.
I also ordered the Headliner that seemingly was unavailable any where else including Legendary! The products were awesome and the headliner was even Legendary "They said was unavailable"!
The ACC Carpet had roughly a 6" overhang! This was the easiest stress free part of my 69 383 resto!

I got out there yesterday and pulled out the carpet and studied things for a while and came to the conclusion that the previously installed insulation/sound deadener might be a problem by taking up space where the carpet needs to sit in the foot well area. I removed some (very hard to get off when you have a torn rotator cuff). Today I’ll go back out and and try to remove some more and put the carpet in place and see how it looks and take a picture and post it.

Thanks again for the replies gentleman
