Remembering Old Gas Stations

-
I actually pumped gas when I was in high school in the 80's. I worked at a Sunoco that still sold leaded gas in 1985. I remember the boss pushing us to open every hood and check oil. It was a time when late 60's and seventies cars were still on the road. You could open the hood from outside on some cars, while others you had to ask people to open the hood. A lot of people didn't want their oil checked so guess what, the boss didn't sell as much oil as he wanted and it was all out fault ( the service lane worker) for not pushing the sale. It was a two bay gas station with tires and repair. Sunoco ended up making it an A-plus convenience store, so there is no evidence of the old two bay shop. I remember having the gas pumpers wad of cash ( $300.00 was a lot of bread back then)and having to make drops in the safe when the wad got "too big" it was on the border of the shady side of town, and co workers would get robbed every once in a while. I was lucky though, never got robbed.

I had an uncle that owned and ran a small town gas station back in Dawson Ga. ( back in 40's, 50's, 60's.... he also kept books for some small businesses around town, just a 2 pump small station. now the cool part of this is he rode a motorcycle from s w Ga to the Indy 500 back in the 30's???? I could not imagine!!!!????

THIS is called SERVICE!

Very col stuff Tony! You should re-create that store front that your parents are In Front of...get some old barn wood and find some similar signs wether they are originals or repops....then get a pic of you and Thelma posing by it :glasses7:

I bet you could slap the front on the side of your shed :happy1:

That's a great idea Keith! Don't know if I could get it done.

too bad the younger generation was never able to experience some of these things from back then!!!!

YUP. The best of times enjoyed by The Greatest Generation! We thought it would last forever.:smilebox:

The last two are about a block apart. There is another one in the same area that was also save and repurposed. I don't have a picture of right now .
I'm glad they were saved.

Took these today in Kimbal MN, I used to deliver to this station, says "established 1929" but I think the old guy told me it was built in 1925, said it was an original Texaco or Conoco station? I know they used to sell Conoco but the station is closed not and they only do bulk stuff, now its just an office and a small room for fixing flat repairs. The steep pitch roof section is the orginal building, side and rear was added on later. The last pic is the owners yard, he has some of the old pumps and signs, family owned for a very long time :glasses7:
