Replacing Gaskets on 90 degree oil filter adapter

What happens is theres a drip of oil on the bolt head and people crawl under to get an extra 1/4 turn with a big old wrench

heat it with a torch till it's red and then let it air cool.

Yep, there's a bolt a guy makes on his CNC machine. Fast Fish out of one of the Carolinas? That one is the response to the OEM replacement is different lengths. There is a different under-head bolt length. Early vs Late? 273 90 deg. or 340 90 deg.?

I bought one since in addition to being strong it was supposed to increase flow

Some kits come with a new heavy wall bolt, have seen quite a few originals twisted because they were to thin and someone tightened them to much.

Weve had about 5 days or horribly strong winds so I put it off until it calmed down. Didnt want dust,dirt and leaves blowing all over under the car while I have that oily thing apart. Lol. Im going to try and get it done tomorrow morning. I had one last question,how do you ensure the large gasket that goes around the perimeter stays lined up when you put the piece against the block? Is there an indentation in the side of the engine block that you insert the gasket into and it will stay lined up when you put the two pieces together

It may or my not. You could put a couple of dabs of grease or silicone to hold it for a moment. Then get the body in there and get the bolt snugged.

there's an indentation where the gasket rides. i like to use hi-tack or contact cement to hold it, just a little bit. like cruze said, a few dabs of sticky grease will work too.

Great,Thanks guys. Would Gasgacinch qualify as contact cement? Would you recommend removing the huge center bolt when the engine is completely cold or slightly warm?

yeah a few dabs of gasgachich would be perfect.

cold. because the exhaust is right there and nobody likes getting burned. yes, some oil will still come out. just sop it up and get the thing back together, hose it all down with brake clean after so that when you check for leaks after you'll be able to see anything.

This is exactly what I have too. According to what I read all of them have that size until 1972

Yeah I don't know, was there when I bought the car. Here is a picture of mine, I just stuck a 3/4" socket on it, my '72, 318, probably the first time it was ever out of the car is the larger size. I'm out.

Hi,I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who offered advice in this thread. I finally got around to replacing the gaskets today and the oil leak is gone.
I annealed the copper washer and no leaks there either. The toughest part of the job was cleaning off the old gasket. It was so dried out and brittle it broke off in pieces. By the way my bolt is the type with the oval holes in it.

Took the car on a 60 mile drive today. Absolutely 100 per cent dry. Not a drip anywhere under the car. Very pleased!

Thanks. I doubt its ever been removed before. Hopefully the previous owner didnt try tightening the bolt down ans bend it like you mentioned. How common is it for the bolt to be damaged? Now im wondering if I buy anotjer bolt so if has been damaged I am able to put it back together right away.

The bolt will have a hole on the side of it. Look at it and if the hole is not round or has a twist to it, I would get another one. The bolt has been over tighten.

I already replaced the gaskets a while ago. The bolt is fine. It was never overtightened.
