Way back when (25 years ago) seems like the rhoads lifters were the thing
to run in your high lift long duration cams on the street. Anyone still run
these things now days? Pro's Con's?

I have an eddy Performer RPM cam and I'm wondering if they will bring
back most of the low end torque I give up with the cam.

I run them in my 340, .505 isky cam. My buddy who helped me with the engine assembly said they make a difference. I have a M-1 intake and 4.10 gears, lots of low end torque!

The Con;

They tick loudly.

The Pro;

They do what they advertise. Restore some low end torque due to the lifter knocking off approx; 8* to 10*'s of duration and some lift. (.25 or was it .025.... .025 I think.)
I have run them twice before and it really helps in makeing the cam tamer down low and helps the car obtain a better dual purpose level.

Mine are pretty quiet, my buddy was suprised you don't hear them in my 340. His dad had them in a 440 sixpack and you could hear them in there a bit.

I've been thinking about them to give me better low end performance.
My current cam has a 234 int and 244 exh duration. Kind of kills the low
end performance. I have crane gold adjustable rocker arms, would I have
trouble setting the lifters because the bleed down?

NO, no adjustment needed. Just swap them out.

With a cam like that (234 intake duration) you should have at least 3.55's and a stock tire or a higher ratio and a taller tire. An example would be 4.10's and a 27 max inch diameter tire.

I am running 3.23 and only 24.25" tires so it's pretty decent in comparison
to a lower gear and taller tires.

I guess I could make sure the current lifters are adjusted again and then
swap them with the Rhoads lifters. Probably have to go through a break
in all over again though....maybe a fall or winter project!

Does anyone know if I could run Rhoads Lifters with Magnum style heads?? Will they allow it to oil through the pushrods??

That cam kills power period... It's not just the duration. The variable duration lifter can be gotten from most performance cam manufacturers now. They may be noisey, they may not. The cams of thier day were not as developed as those today. Honestly tho, that cam isnt very large. It just doesnt make a heck of a lot of power or cylinder pressure.

Yes they do what they are supposed to do. I used them at one time myself. Keep in mind they work off oil pressure, As RPM rises, so does oil pressure..and there isn't time to bleed down so in theory at RPM you have the rated camshaft profile (lift/duration). If you run a high volume/pressure oil pump you will defeat the bleed down ability of that specific lifter.

I don't know, with a 4 speed it seems to make a LOT of power above 2,000
rpm. It only suffers some on the low end. It was built to run at the strip and
I bought the car and have put her back on the street. I know it's been run
up over 7,500 rpm. Cylinder pressures are 195 lbs so it seems like it's making
some good pressure. I don't know everything that was done to this engine
but I have a receipt showing at least over 3,000 was put into it. I swapped
out the M1 intake that was on it to an eddy RPM air gap and that brought
my low end drivability back down to a decent level. The street avenger 670
I put on also is more responsive than the 3310 that was on her but the
3310 sure pulls better over 6K rpms though!

Seeing the comment below, I doubt the Rhoades would help me as they
put a higher pressure and volume oil pump in it to handle the higher strip
rpms they were going to run. I guess I'll keep her this way for a while until
I get tired of it or have her torn down for something else. The 4 speed
trans helps but you can find it hard not to bark the tires at every start!
