I have a car with factory black leather that is really nice but it has always been very hard. I would like to know how to safely soften it. Google has not been too helpful for old car seats. I do not want to loose the color by using something too harsh.

I've used a product from Mother's before on leather that worked well, but so long ago I can't remember what it was called. Some type of cleaner/conditioner is what I remember.

What about boot/leather conditioner? Get it at real shoe stores, Red Wing retailers, etc. or even saddlery or tack shops.
One thing I was taught years back: warm the leather up (hair dryer/heat gun on low) and work it into the leather a little at a time. Lotsa elbow grease. Might need to do it again in a day or two, keep after it. Once it softens up, clean it well with soap and water; the stuff can leave a greasy residue (don't wear your white pants to the disco for a few days).
But before you do all that, make SURE its real leather and not the fake vinyl or pleather or whatever you wanna call it. That stuff doesn't soften up no matter what you do as far as I know.

Saddle Soap… you will have to apply it many times.

Start with a good leather cleaner like Mcguires, Mothers or something similar… not cheap crap… then start applying Saddle Soap.

Saddle Soap can be bought at any boot or tack shop.
That’s good ****. My parents used it on boots and saddles when I was kid. Forgot all about it till you said it. Then I could instantly smell it.

I used this to soften up the seats in my 70 Charger SE and BMW E30 convertible.
Buy 3 jars … apply copious amounts and let it sit in the heat ( will have to wait till summer in Iowa) once it soaks in repeat as many times as necessary. Then polish off the seats with microfibre towels .
IT REALLY WORKS ! Great stuff !
