Selling a Vehicle on EBay Could Be Problematic.

Ebay recommends not using PayPal to buy/sell vehicles because the paypal guarantee does not apply to large items like vehicles. PayPal recommends an escrow service. So I went to escrow.com to find the online registration for a vehicle sale requires a VIN with no less than 11 digits. Our 1965 Plymouth Valiant Signet Convertible has a VIN of only 10 digits. Always a glitch somewhere. Still looking for a purchaser, so no big deal for now.

Where do you come up with that? The VIN was a standard name applied to all numbers to make each one unique no matter what state they went to.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standardized the VIN to 17 digits in 1981. Vehicles made before 1981 may have a VIN that is 5–13 digits long.

i have bikes that are pre 81 and some from overseas and the have VINs that range from 16 digits to 8

Tell that to the DMV or the feds. There is nothing in the three letters of VIN that denotes an amount of numbers or characters.

they could've called 'em the number-irical birth identifier for all i care. all i knows is that ain't nobody never asked me for a serial number on any vehicle i've ever owned.
