Shop must haves

-
One thing about a 4 post lift is that their foot print is huge. Mine is 110" wide. It will shrink your shop quick.

The 4 post is just in the future to stack cars up. I always have the 30x40 shop that will be empty besides car parts in it. That one is already insulated with hvac in it, but it only has 10ft ceilings.

I’ve thought of changing the layout to this, so I can keep that top right corner of the shop as a little “work space” area. Then if I ever need to bring more cars in I can pull under the 4 post and up front in that area.

Maybe one day I’ll get to build another shop and I’ll get to do it like Momzee. I agree with everyone it’s an amazing shop.

I have my dream shop sketched up in AutoCAD (80'x80'). The most important things for me are heat retention (heavy insulation, nice heating system), a beautiful floor (no more laying in puddles, broken glass, and dog sh**), a music source, and a high up window that the cats can jump in and out of when they're outdoors playing. I could care less about high ceilings and jumbo garage doors. I'm working on A bodies, not tractor trailers.

Maybe a 10' X 10' - "tool crib" for less frequently used tools - like cherry picker, hydraulic press, extra engines, etc. Also some safety items: more than a couple of G I Joe band-aids from when your kids were young. Use a laundry tub for your sink & put an eye wash station on that faucet. Have more at least one fire extinguisher at each end of the shop - mounted up on a wall, not just sitting behind stuff on the floor. Get some file cabinets at garage sales, use them as tools/parts/fasteners/consumables storage. MOUNT YOUR COMPRESSOR AS FAR AWAY FROM THE SHOP AS POSSIBLE! Get a service cart - its so much easier to roll the tools you use all the time to the task rather than making multiple trips to the back of the shop to get something you need right now.

The good thing about 4 post they are mobile . I went with all 12x14 garage doors . If 1 day I get a 5th wheel motor home I can back it in with no issues getting other cars in and out.

I like these garage doors, found on FB marketplace for 1k each, but I’m not sure if I could get them to work on my shop? I thought I should be able to change the track angles to make it work.

They are 9ft wide by 10ft tall

Having worked in the overhead door industry, and having a brother who sells them across the globe, I can tell you that doors are available in nearly any size and configuration imaginable. Like anything else, suffer the pain once and get what you want that will work best for you.

Also by every garage door and by tool area, 4post and common area along where blasting cabinet is there is an air drop and welding outlet. Plumbed for paint booth. If you have time try to think of all situations you may need something.

That's a commercial truck dock door, but yes you can get curved tracks to follow the shape of your new roof. Just be aware that when the door is open it's blocking the light above it on the ceiling.
the neighbor has LED light string on the door so when it goes up, it contacts "something" and the lights go on. he's the electrician, all I know is it looks neat and gives light when the door is up.
I haven't noticed or didn't pay attention, but A/C would be a nice addition in some areas.

That's a great spot for the compressor! Have you thought of enclosing it to reduce the noise?

Yeah that’s the problem. I don’t work on my truck or my wifes car, I think my truck is like 6.5ft wide and the mirrors fold in.

I just went to Menards, if I want a 10x10 door I need to buy commercial and that won’t be ready for 3-4 weeks and will cost 2k per door without a motor, add in another 3-500 per motor. So 7500 for doors, if I want them sooner make it about 5-7k per door without motors. At those costs I’ll be fine with 9ft wide doors lol.

Try researching SteelCraft overhead doors, or check into a local overhead door business, they might be able to get it done quicker and cheaper. Just my .02
