My brother has a 1/24th scale 1/4 mile drag strip in his basement. Once a month we have drag race night. We usually get about 20 or so participants. I race an H&R chassis '69 Dart, a Parma chassis '41 Plymouth Coupe and my wife runs a Parma '69 Plymouth Road Runner. It's a fun hobby and relatively inexpensive, once the system is setup. There weren't any drag race slot car facilities in our area, so we created our own.

This is too funny that I would find this thread. An old friend of mine that I raced 1/8 scale nitro offroad with 5-6 years ago contacted me out of the blue asking for me to join him as a birthday present at the slot car dragway. You might think Im speaking of an early teen, but in fact, its was his 56th birthday!

I joined him and hung out all night. He has 12 of these cars, and he let me use one to enter. He knows Im a Mopar fan, so he gave me a great looking flat black '72 Cuda to run with. Well I had a blast and wound up winning $47 for quick light of the night. While at first I found it to be a little boring, I warmed up to it a little and find myself scouring the internet looking to buy a mopar drag slot of some type.

I have no idea what Im doing though, so I'm doing some reading on motors, because I dont want to start out in the middle or bottom of the pack, I want to have something thats on the faster side of the bunch :)

So while I havent found my car yet, Im soon to be into it full swing.

I have seen the sets but I have done drag slot car racing..

Wrencher, my son and I raced 1/32 competitively for some years. It was a blast ! We then got into MX and the slots were put away.

      It is a great sport..

Indeed, and I like that they are cheap enough to buy into. I was paying $700+ on a rolling chassis, then springing for engine and exhaust, radio and servos to get a ready to run racer. It looks like I can be into a good slot drag car for $250ish.

It took getting used to though, because your really just pushing a button, and you have to wait in line to get on the track. With the nitro cars, you doing more, and you can share the track with a ton of cars.

Either way, Im going to dig it for awhile

A good car is about 70. You need ti take it apart and put back together, balance it, replace the tires and lube it..it is actually lot of fun.

With our nitro, the nearest person that knows anything is an hours drive so we just play by ourselves.. there is a MX track we belonged to for years about 25 minutes away..the owner doesn't mind us playing...

$70 for 1/24? Thats even Better!

Im so out there on the motors though. The one I was using ran like 1.078@47-50mph, which was one of the faster cars of the night. It dropped off when the glue built up over a couple rounds.

Based on that time, can you guesstimate what kind of motor I need to be looking at?
Im seeing lots of grp 16, some grp 12 and some grp20 motors on the internet but I dont know whats the faster of them. I know as a general rule of thumb, the grp 12 is faster than group 16, but I dont know motor was on the one I ran last week. My friend really couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me lol..... He's mad he lost to a noob.

What kind of nitros do you run?

No , 1/32. I have been out of the game for awhile but the league I raced in is still active...in fact, one of my friends just built a 4 lane parma like track.

I shall be back to you.

They were running a 1/4 scale track. the loaner was running it at like 1.07@45-48mph. I would want to be at least that fast. Would a group 20 fit that bill?

great post!! and thanks for all the pics. i spent a lot of time "running slots" in my youth in the mid-60's at a best friend's basement. there were four of us who used to compete and we all had our own cars. i had a nice collection of "slot car mags" at the time. i remember one that was a little bigger than the old Reader's Digest that was about 50 pages of all kinds of cars, motors, wheels, tires, parts... i spent hours looking at all the new parts when they came out.

Wow! This takes me back. I got out my Scalextric set last year and was so disappointed because my tires had all gone hard and were useless. Back in the day there was a sports store that had a huge track set up in the basement. Racing started Saturday afternoon with the championship Sunday morning. I was always eliminated and home for supper Saturday LOL! There were some awesome cars. My pride and joy was a homemade Cheetah
Thanks for sharing all your pics.
