I can't speak for all cams, but I'm pretty sure COMP states their lash settings are "hot"...setting cold lash at the hot specs will close up the gap and alter the effective timing events.
If you zero lash a solid cam-regardless of hot or cold-it can cause component damage, or at the very least make the engine run like poo since it won't develop good compression or manifold vacuum.
