Mini starter hangs up after setting a while , tryed different starters mainly cheap ones , seems like the contacts are always black , car is being worked o n so it sets a lot , it's the solenoid on the starter that's hanging , any thoughts on causes , I'm thinking trying a oem brand instead on china starters FYI it's a 4 speed car 74 sport 318

Usually starter problems are caused by poor electrical connections or bad cables leading to voltage drop and high current draw. More rarely it is something something hanging up or dragging on the flywheel/transmission side or binding in the engine somewhere. As far as recommendations, I went with a Napa starter for an '89 Dakota on my 318 and haven't had any trouble.

I would inspect everything in that circuit. I cannot remember, but didn't the 74 model have a clutch safety switch in that circuit that prevented the starter from operating unless the clutch pedal was depressed?

Describe your problem more specifically. What does "hanging up" mean?

Won't crank?

Won't engage, loud click from the solenoid?

Nothing at all, no noise when you twist the key?

What have you done to try and troubleshoot this?
