hey every one! i need a little advice! my starter went out a few days ago and i need to replace it....i have a 73 dart swinger with a 360 headers and a full size starter is there a secrete to removing the thing or am i in trouble!? any help or advise would be appreciated ;)

Long tube headers?

you will have to loosen the header so it shwing from side to side. you may have to pop the centerlink and move it out of the way. patience is key. ive only put them in with the header and havent had to take one out yet unless i was yanking the whole engine

*knocks on wood*

i have the header loose i was afraid of the center link?? how is that done thanks for your quick reply by the way! do i need special tools??

While you have the starter out for replacement look at the Dodge Dakota starters as a replacement high torque mini starter.

Thanks for the advise any certain year i know it is on here some where but covered in grease and trying to get this boat anchor out lol

a pickle fork and a BFH works well for me. pop the tie rod and the pitman arm if you have to . i dont recall if that is directly in the way , but i cant hurt any. you may have to take the header all the way off the studs to work the starter out. you can also turn the steering wheel to move the pitman arm out of the way. its a matter of finding that sweet spot

this would make things a lot easier for sure

Did you really have to do all that? I replaced mine and didn't loosen or remove anything. It wasn't easy but I did it.

Oh, it's definitely a pain. When I put my other engine together it will be mini starter all the way.

thanks guys i will tackle it again tomorrow had to work today! gotta do what i gotta do....no way it would ever come out with out doing all of this stuff....plasma cutter! lol too funny! ;)

hey guys got the starter out...replaced it with the Dakota
starter...i love it turns my engine over like no other! i recommend this upgrade to all! thanks for all the help guys!

FYI, unbolt, move off studs, rotate up or down, move arounnd and take pit from top or bottom, if you have a pitman arm puller, 10 minutes and its off, turn driver wheel out and itll relax the center link down enough to give you some more clearance. Get RAM mini starter and replace. No use for those old gear reduction starters anymore.
