Okay FABO nation, let's hear your similar experiences and solutions that actually worked. BTW, not an electrical problem in the steering column. Thanks, Dave

Some times a simple sheet metal shield can cut radiant heat.

If the header is touching the column that's different.

Also many columns had (keyword is HAD) internal insulation to prevent under hood hot air from getting in past the lower bearing.

Also a shield around the collapsible part of the column to assist with the same.

Manifolds and 2 1/2" exhaust system send the heat out the back.

Headers dump heat into the engine bay and it needs a way out. Heat rises, possibly up an open run steering column?

Name your poison by the desired results you wish to achieve.

Manifolds ^ to 2 1/2" Exhaust, out the back.

The later cars have a foam seal at the bottom of the column. Also a plastic cover over the collapsible diamond portion of the column, this is all to keep engine compartment heat or cold air out. I usually cut the column back on floor shift cars that have headers. It does help keep the heat from the headers away when they are close.

Thanks OMM - the PO did cut back to the firewall the lower end my column, so that end is wide open and hot air is coming in. I'll stuff a short length of 2" OD Home Depot foam insulation for 1" pipe into the cut end to block out the hot air.
