Stock short block,440 builds....

Amen...brother...I'm hearing ya...kinda like the chinese guy running into the door with a hard-on and broke his nose..lmao...

Silly me,never posted the whole buildup. 74 Club Cab 4x4. 4:10 gears,35" tall tires. Stock 727& converter. Stock mid 70's short block. Well worked 906 castings.(bowl work, roof raised. P/r restrictions to..060"). Thin steel shim head gaskets. Torker 440-2 (not my choice),a well worked T/Q when done. Curved distributor. Crower 32243 grind (112 l/c 228/236@ .050,.478/.502 lift. A bit doggy under 2500,came on like crazy after. A dual plane, and a multi spark ignition box would have worked wonders.

Something that would probably be helpful to include with these recipes would be what's downstream from the engine...

Couple quotes off Sweptline.org

I know it's not stock bottom end, but the club cab reminded me of it. QuickD has had pretty good success racing low buck 440s and now runs a 605" Hemi IIRC.

quickd100 » Mon Jun 24, 2013 8:23 pm I built a .030 over 440 for my bosses 83 clubcab about 15 years ago. The build was KB hyerutetic pistons with the quench height set at .035 from hitting the heads, (452's). Used the MP porting templates, bronze guides, stock size valves. We used the .474 lift MP hydralic cam, street dominator intake with a 850 thermoquad. 1-3/4" truck headers and 3" duals. Compression is measured right at 9.4-1 and it run great on 89.5 octane pump gas. Behind the motor is a TA 10" convertor and a 3.55 suregrip.
It runs like a scaulded cat and care is needed if you hammer on the throttle at lower speeds as it will go up in smoke and try and swap ends on you.
The cam you have will work just fine at either compression ratio, you will want a good convertor and 3.55 or deeper gears to get the most out of the package. I can't say enough good about the 10" Turbo Action convertor, it's rock solid reliable and you will find if you install one that it will be the single biggest performance improvement.Dave
moporridge » Sat Oct 12, 2013 8:06 pm A friend of mine also had a set of hardened seats put in the 516's and they leaked. On my moho 440 I just milled my 452 heads .060 and ran the Fel Pro .020 thicker than stock steel shim gasket for a difference of .040 all together. I then ordered the rocker shaft shim kit package to raise the rockershafts .040 for the correct lifter preload. Engine has 284 purpleshaft and runs like a bat outta h*ll. Dont be afraid of milling them.060....the Mopar engine book recommends this for a compression increase. Just be sure to run head bolt washers. Also check intake manifold fit anytime milling is done...it will usually require shaving if heads are milled .060.

.Share your B/RB builds.....(stock short block)....

In 2001 I built my first 440. I had no involvement with these internet forums though. I got advice from Mopar Magazines.
I pulled a 1978 440 from a New Yorker. It had less than 80,000 miles. I had the cylinders honed, the decks cot .010, then installed the cleaned up parts with new rings, bearings and gaskets. Upon the advice of Dick Landy, I had the 452 heads rebuilt and milled .050. The compression was supposed to be in the 9.2 range. I used a 280/474 MP cam, Edelbrock RPM intake and a Holley 750.
This was the first 440 I had in the Charger. It ran great and never knocked! Decent power, decent fuel economy and a lot less frustration!

A good build,FrankenDuster.... Relax ,and take a breath. You remind me,of myself...

Really?
I used to be a Chevy guy....Had a 71 C 10 and later an 84 Silverado. In the meantime, I had a 76 Camaro set up for autocross/road coarse fun. I felt the pull back to Ma Mopar in the late 90s!

Artie,he's learning all aspects.... Been on the phone ,with RB. Smart dude. I don't know, what ,you're complaining about.

Hi gents, I’m back. I gave up on my truck and 440 and sold it. Not doing that again. Got a free ‘77ish moho the other day for the 440. Working on getting a clean ’68 D200 to put it in. I’ll probably have to do pistons (open to budget recommendations but KB quench pads look like a good idea?). Gonna shoot for cheap gas 9.5CR. Likely 452 heads.

Probably stock moho 727 torque converter but changing it is an option.

Wearing out camquest now trying to pick a cam. Not too low powerband, not too high...thoughts?

Don't think anyone will build 1 quite like this for any form of street use, it was race only but it ticked over @900rpm and was docile in my opinion, put together myself in a shed back in 1989>

Mamma Mia, those TRW slugs were heavy.
Nice that one of Tims threads resurfaced. Still miss him.

I've got a 60 over 440 that we put together in 1988, the build was straight out of the mopar engine book. TRW slugs, 80cc 452 heads ported by myself with 2.14/1.81 valves and mopar iron rockers and the 5.57 mopar cam. At 9.5 compression it makes 524 hp and 550 tq with an old M1 intake and 850 Holley. I found 90 percent of all the parts a reassemble it a few years back and put it on the dyno, I was pleased with the numbers.

Abodybomber Tim would be tickled to see his thread come back to life. I sure do miss my buddy. :(

The Bomber was a night owl, I could always count on him to be on Fabo in the late/early hours when I was battling insomnia.
I still battle with the insomnia, but all the west coast guys are sleeping and rest of the country is working.
