Stop in for a cup of coffee

Your points arent closing. They are an on/off switch for all intents and purposes.
With the test light still connected you can determine where the fault is. Ground jumper on a small flat screwdriver.probe down the line until it lights.

what i used to do for a quick test when everything is connected properly was bridge points with a flat screwdriver, and coil wire set up near a ground. If all was good, you get a spark.

back to your conundrum. probe with the test light, clip on pos post.
dist housing should light, ground side of points should light.

the fargo sat for lord knows how long,
No spark either. I poked around with a test light and found points werent making “contact”. Cleaned and adjusted. And it fired.
thanks! I'll give it a shot.

Can do same with am ohmmeter, clip on coil end of wire and probe
The points. Looking for continuity, less resistance is better.
Totally agree. Chris did you check the housing ground to the block like I asked? You said it is loaded with RTV so can be it also. Hey I sent you a points ignition book ever read it? It will walk you right through the whole system also.

yep, I actually have it on my desk as we speak. And yes, I checked it last night, I'm getting .2 ohms at the firewall ground. and .4 from the frame to the head. I think you said those need to be .8? I did move the firewall to engine ground from the intake to one of the bolts for the trans, it stayed at .2. I'm thinking its the dizzy not making good contact to ground on the block as I'm getting a 0.0 reading there. Which is why I'm going to remove it tonight and clean it down to bare iron. same with the grounds.

Chris here you go. Don't overthink it the coil ground goes through the points and act like a switch which tells the coil to fire. The distributor has to be grounded for it to work and the points have to have clean contact area like TJ said.

hmm to test it without removing the dizzy, could one put a temp jumper wire from the dizzy housing to the block? or even the frame?

OK that is fine the engine is grounded. Do the same thing to the distributor housing and see if it under a ohm. Also take the points lead off the coil and make sure the points are closed should be way under a ohm if the points are making contact, over that they need to be cleaned/changed. or a bad distributor ground. I personally would do the checks before taking things apart, find a problem fix it and move on from there.

Frank I miss anything obvious? Oh yeah the condenser. Make sure it is not shorted to ground also. Chris it is really easy once you get it old school switching system. Think of it as water plumbing. the 12v is the water looking to go out. The points are a on off spigot, the condenser a pressure tank. and the ground is where the water wants to go.

will do. Thanks. I do think i've narrowed this down to something dizzy related. I do know the points are at least looking like they open and close all the way visually, I'll put the meter on it tonight and see.

My grandmother likely wont make it to Christmas, and if she does, it most assuredly will be her last. And we can't even check her out and bring her home from the nursing home for a few hours. 2 weeks ago, she had another stroke, spent a week in the hospital and seemed to be recovering, after a week in the nursing home, shes relapsed and has now lost control of all bodily functions but breathing and heart beats. completely wheel chair bound and having to be fed by staff. Can't even keep her eyes open.

Sorry to read this. Sending prayers to her and all your family.

Morning guys, Sorry to hear Chris. Sounds like the end is near. No more suffering though. Massive strokes are nasty stuff.

What time do you plan on doing this?
I'm not sure. I'm gonna stop by the nursing home tonight otw home for a bit, not sure how long I'll stay. And I likely wont get back to the polara until tomorrow night, even though I'd like to get on it tonight but it'll be after dark before I get home. And cold.

If you do it Sat call me I will try to walk you through it while your doing it. After 5 Its Mitchy time around here!
thanks Hoppy! man, I'm gonna need to bring a trailer full of beer to Carlisle. Oh, btw, command approved the alternate AT, but waiting on Battalion to approve it and they're balking at it. 50/50 chance at this point of getting approved for it.

Well went to the shop it is frozen solid even the beer in the fridge. Will take a while to get it at least 50 in there. Just ordered the pistons for the slant. Have to love Amazon 100 with rings and pins. Cant find a 64 anywhere near here for a core block so will be doing the stich weld on this one. Should be interesting never did that before. Glad I did take it apart and have it checked out. There goes the interior money for sure.

you want a 64 slant block? I MAY know someone locally with some, I'll ask.

To much to ship and I want to get it assembled next month to go in. This will work just did not expect what had to be done. It sat way to long.
