All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment aka ALICE Pack
Supposed to be for 50 to 70 pounds...we usually rolled with around 100 - 125 pounds
The safest place for your things that break is in the middle of the main compartment, but for other things that you need quick access to, you usually put those in the top flap pouch, since when you "rucksack flop" the side pouches will absorb the impact with the ground.
Much of that remains constant, except for the "top flap" rule when conducting airborne operations, which inverts the rucksack

I say all that, to say this....
My Demo Sergeant, after an infiltration jump and relatively long movement carrying our rucksacks, does the flop as we take a break... Pulls open the top flap of his rucksack and makes the comment "I guess I shouldn't have put my banana in the top flap"... Which in total darkness and fairly exhausted...was EXTREMELY funny.
Banana mush covered everything in that pocket.
