Stop in for a cup of coffee

Morning!
-18/0°f.
Im trying to decide if i want to hunt for my spare door spring or run without it. Its a heavy door with a commercial opener. Guess i should rewind cables and see if brake will hold.
I need this like another hole in the head..

The AM radio station I listen to for the LA traffic reports on my road trips south is an ALL NEWS type station. Yesterday they were very adament about reminding the spectators going to the Rose Parade "NO UMBRELLAS! Pack your ponchos or rain coats!"

The compressor is original to the house, so about 20 years old. Thinking about getting an assessment on the size and maybe update/upgrade
Two options: Replace the compressor only, or replace the entire system. You may (or may not) be aware that that R410a has been "outlawed" (similar to the R-12 -> R134a for vehicles years ago), and it is now illegal to manufacture systems with R410a. However, you can still find and purchase R410a compressors. (Complete system? Good luck!)

If you're thinking of replacing the entire system, sit down and hold onto your checkbook, as the new R454b systems are outrageously priced. And you can't run a R454b condensing (outdoor) unit with an "old" R410a indoor coil.

I told my boss this past summer that I don't want anything to do with this new R454b **** (don't want to use it, don't want to quote it, don't want to be Tech Support for our Service Techs, etc), and it's just another reason for me to retire.

We still have an old R22 system. I asked for a compressor unit replacement quote but it needs a whole system replacement. We have lived here 30 years and it was old when we moved in.

My folks still have an R-22 system, and my father (an old facilities maintenance guy) keeps that old Rheem unit spic & span!

I replaced their furnace about 10 years ago, but re-used the old R-22 a-coil. When I heard R410a was going away, and I bought that new system for our place, I also bought an R410a condensing unit and coil to match his "new-ish" furnace, and sometime this spring I'll get over there and install everything.

Sad to think about it like this, but he and mom are over 90, and I'm going to have to replace that condensing unit "eventually" anyway, when they pass and it comes time to sell their place....

The air handler is newer than the outdoor compressor so the idea is to leave the indoor bits in place and look at just the outdoor.

Ha! See my response right above, #658,032.

If/when that time comes (and if it's before I retire), feel free to give me a shout and I'll see what I can do to help you out.

Thanks Amigo.

I will for sure

There are a few infrastructure projects associated. I need to get the electrical panel upgraded. Annoying that if the washing machine starts the spin cycle, and I'm running the compressor in the garage, everything trips.

It's a split level and all the downstairs outlets are on the same circuits.
