Stop in for a cup of coffee

Nice need that on the shop ceiling
I'm surprised you don't just put in a regular 2'x4' panel drop ceiling. They have insulated panels for those with vinyl facing that weigh nearly nothing. With a regular metal frame drop ceiling, it doesn't matter where the joists are since you just have to hang wires from them to hold the rails.

Drop ceilings are not intended for shops.

With the metal framework & hanger while extending into the cold area above, condensation would from on the metal when the lower area is heated.

Drips will occur all over.

Hoppy needs to seal his entire lid with something like 2" foam & then add R30 fiberglass over the top as his finances allow.

Never had any issue with them around here...

See how some of your panels have bowed & are dropping out? That is due to moisture, IE, condensation.

Nah, those are from a leaking roof. The rest of the shop has them and they are fine. That's my friend's shop.

I had a full drop in my Upholstery shop for years and never had a problem. We also use them at work in the pharmaceutical production areas in metal frame buildings with unheated/insulated spaces above. There is little surface area for the metal and the radiant heat is enough that they don't sweat.

Condensation is often thought to be leaks - when there are no leaks. ;-)

But it would take a building inspection to know for sure.

I have seen this exact situation before though, several times.

The real trick is to use the vinyl faced fiberglass insulated panels instead of the cheap chopped paperboard panels. The insulated panels seal around the metal frames and provide enough insulation to keep them from ever sweating.
