First.... 
Hard for us to fathom the conditions during the Great Depression that drove people to desperation. Yet people like your great-grandmother overcame all sorts of traumatic events. There is a book called The Suitcases, a true story of three young sisters who were picked up by child welfare, written by one of the sisters. Reading it you get the child's point of view of life in orphanages and foster homes and the ways they coped, and didn't. It's a fairly quick read because it's hard to put down. I think the people who lived through that time should be remembered.

My grandparent's lived through it and continued to live their lives that way. Re-use a tea bag and a sammich was one very thinly sliced piece of ham and 2 pieces of bread. Never was a condiment in the house. Sit in the dark with a flashlight and read, and never did own a tv. Go halves on the paper with neighbor of the same vintage.

I don't see why they would badmouth you. If they're that eager to contract you, they might be so again. If they've screwed you, there's no way you'll take their business, is there?

Both my Sons and their significants, will be here. Should have a house full, Including Great Grandma. Sue makes whatever the Birthday person wants for dinner. My Daughter opted for Tacos... Yum... Wow.... a coup finally started in Venezuela over the last few days. I got an email out to my buddy down there, we'll see what the on the ground situation is. He'd sent me a skype message saying things were getting dicey down there a couple days ago but never responded.
