Aren't a couple of you guys pretty decent modern car mechanics? Keepher and Mitch, I'm looking at you. Maybe mostly at Keith.

I'm having a little trouble with the ABS module on my recently acquired 1998 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8 TS 180 hp station wagon. It needs re-coding. Or does it? As far as I can tell, the number on the module is exactly the same as on other identical cars.

Unfortunately, the original module is no longer in the car, it was replaced by a shop that didn't know what they were doing, almost as if I'd done it myself.

Help?

you have an ODBII code scanner/reader?

I don't myself, no.

Maybe a little more info is needed. I spoke to a mechanic today. He told me that you need to read out the 'code' in the original unit and transfer it to the new one if you replace the unit. If you don't have the original unit, only Audi can supply you with the correct one. Last time HE did that, it cost him $600.

In forum posts, I've read that units with the exact same Bosch type number should work without re-coding. Mine doesn't.

I'd like to get some facts straight. To be fair, I've called the local Audi dealer and they're getting back to me tomorrow.

oh yea - that's just engine codes isn't it
yes and only certain ones. There are some codes that are manufacturer and dealer level that can only be seen with a DTRB or similar scanner. For example. My 2007 dodge cailber had a computer that controlled all the circuits instead of fuses. when the headlights burnout, the computer shuts down that circuit. that has to be reset by a DTRB or similar, meaning a trip to the dealership and paying 100 bucks for a 5 second job.

Nope, don't have anything for diagnostics. Stuff like that I take to someone else. I do the part swappin gravy jobs.
